    Nov. 28, 2024

CHRISTIAN LUDWIG ATTERSEE* (born 1940 in Bratislava)

    Est: €1,600 - €2,600

CHRISTIAN LUDWIG ATTERSEE* (born 1940 in Bratislava) Friendship, 1990 acrylic/cardboard 44 x 31,3 cm signed Attersee, dated 90 titled Freundschaft SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1600 - 2600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1600 Christian Ludwig Attersee came to Austria as a child in 1944. His father, the architect and builder Christian Ludwig, built the first high-rise in Bratislava in 1936. In 1951, the son began writing short novels, lyrics to songs, drawing comics and designing stage sets. He had to give up his desire to become an opera singer early on due to extensive hearing loss. From 1957, Ludwig studied stage architecture at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna. From 1959 to 1963 he studied painting there with Eduard Bäumer. The first picture cycles were created between 1963 and 1965: “Weather Pictures” and “Rainbow Anomalies”. In the mid-1960s, Attersee became friends with protagonists of Viennese Actionism. He took part in campaigns by Günter Brus, Hermann Nitsch and Gerhard Rühm. With his first "object inventions" in the area of eroticism and everyday life, he made a name for himself in European Pop Art. The object inventions typical of him, such as the "Speisekugel", "Speiseblau" or the "Atterstecker", were created. In 1965 he moved to Berlin and showed his first exhibition there. From 1966, Ludwig took the stage name Christian Ludwig Attersee, in reference to his time at Attersee. In 1971/72 he was in West Berlin on a DAAD scholarship. Initially close to object and performance art, Attersee tried to develop a new form of total work of art. Later, drawings and panel paintings on sexuality and the experience of nature became characteristic of him, such as the “Children's Room Triptych” from 1971, inspired by a picture book illustration by Fedor Flinzer. Attersee's works are characterized by figural-symbolic style, bright colors and dynamic brushstrokes, often incorporating the frame or text into the image. In 1984 he represented Austria at the Venice Biennale. In 1985 Attersee released his first LP: “Songs of Weather and Love”. This was followed in 1986 by the design of Vienna's first champagne ball in the Konzerthaus and in 1987 by a swing ship for André Heller's “Luna Luna Fairground”. For the facade of the Attersee House (1986) on Vienna's Mariahilfer Straße, Attersee designed the largest glass mosaic in Europe ("Weather Merchant"), implemented by Elio Macoritto. In 2006, Attersee covered the Vienna Ringturm in foil for six weeks. In 2007, the monumental large interior mosaic “Wealth of the Earth” was completed in the Federal Geological Institute in Vienna. In 1990 Attersee was appointed professor at the master class for experimental design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. From 1992 to 2009 he led the painting, animated film and tapestry master class. He also taught at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

Atterseee, Christian Ludwig (*1940) Bird Sleep, 2002 (Technique unspecified) Signed and dated lower right, marked as EA (first edition/proof) lower left Sheet size: 38.1 x 19.6 in / Image size: 22.4 x 15.7 in In Christian Ludwig Attersee's etching "Bird Sleep" from 2002, typical elements of his later works become visible, where experiences of nature and poetic imagery play a central role. The fine, graphic execution of the etching, paired with a surreal visual language, leaves much room for deeper associations and imaginative interpretations. In this work, Attersee's role as a storyteller and boundary-crosser between dream and reality is evident, as he subtly alludes to themes that occupy us in our everyday lives. "Bird Sleep" captures this tension between nature observation and inner dream worlds in a way that is characteristic of Attersee's oeuvre.

Atterseee, Christian Ludwig (*1940) Bockministrantin No. 2, 2010 Lithograph and screenprint Signed and dated lower right, marked as EA (first edition/proof) lower left Sheet size: 27.4 x 19.6 in / Image size: 18.9 x 14 in Christian Ludwig Attersee remains true to his characteristic visual language in his lithograph „Bockministrantin Nr. 2“ from 2010. While his early works were dedicated to object and action art, this piece reveals central themes such as sexuality and nature experience. Notably, the grotesque-symbolic representation of a human-like figure integrated into the visage of a goat gives the image a surreal and deeply symbolic quality. Attersee's work is characterized by dense, narrative associations and a tendency to oscillate between reality and fantasy. „Bockministrantin Nr. 2“invites the viewer to reflect on the interactions of nature, religion, and human identities. In this lithograph, distinguished by bold lines and an almost sketch-like technique, Attersee's ability to condense critique and complex social themes into his depictions becomes evident.

Atterseee, Christian Ludwig (*1940) Where Fruits Live, 2000 Colour lithograph Signed and dated lower right, marked as EA (first edition/proof) lower left Sheet size: 27.6 x 19.7 in / Image size: 17.1 x 12.2 in In "Where Fruit Dwells," fruit forms appear to float in a lively, almost surreal space, combining both abstract and figurative elements. Bright yellow and green tones dominate the composition, creating a dynamic, energy-filled atmosphere. The fruit, as a recurring motif, is symbolically charged, evoking associations with fertility, life, and natural cycles. At the same time, Attersee's abstract representation and narrative approaches imbue the image with a poetic quality. In this colour lithograph, Attersee demonstrates his ability to translate themes such as nature and joy of life into a multifaceted yet accessible visual language that transports the viewer into a fanciful world.

Atterseee, Christian Ludwig (*1940) A celebration for Arnulf Rainer for his 65th birthday, 1994 Colour screen printing on textile Signed and dated within the print on the right Round, diameter 34,8 in framed Christian Ludwig Attersee, who successfully completed his painting studies with Eduard Bäumer in 1963, presents a playful homage to his artist colleague in his screen print "A Celebration for Arnulf Rainer on His 65th Birthday" from 1994. The screen print features vibrant colours and dynamic figures—abstracted bird and fish forms joyfully dancing in a circular composition. The gestural lines and the free arrangement of the motifs represent the narrative visual language that characterizes Attersee's work. The piece is not just a birthday greeting, but also an ironic commentary on artist friendship and their shared artistic journey. The blend of expressive colouring and delicate contours gives the image a lively, almost festive aura, fitting for the occasion.

colour serigraphy signed, dated and numbered lower right: 115/140 plate size: 25 x 17,7 in / sheet size 27,4 x 10,1 in Christian Ludwig Attersee successfully graduated in 1963 under Eduard Bäumer. While at first, he dedicated himself primarily to Action painting and objective work, he later moved to drawings and panel work with themes surrounding sexuality and the experience of nature, which came characteristic for him. Bright colors, dynamic penmanship and figurative, often symbolic depictions make up his work. His paintings are informed by enigmatic associations and fantastical, narrational aspects. The artist himself appears as fantastical poet who, while transgressing the boundaries of fantasy and reality, with his critical and collectively joining drawings, discusses topics which are ever present in our day to day lives.

    Est: €3,000 - €4,000

Lithography 2-6/6 signed and dated lower right 29,9 x 22,2 in framed Christian Ludwig Attersee successfully completed his painting studies with Eduard Bäumer in 1963. While he initially devoted himself to object and action art, drawings and panel paintings on the themes of sexuality and the experience of nature later became characteristic of his work. Bright colours, dynamic brushwork and figurative, often symbolic depictions characterise his works. Subtle associations and imaginative, narrative aspects flow into his paintings. Attersee appears as a poet rich in associations and, as it were, as a tightrope walker between fantasy and reality, who in his ultimately quite critical, collectively binding drawings and paintings touches on conditions and symptoms that we have to deal with every day.
