John Atherton American, (1900 - 1952) abstract oil on canvas Signed lower right. Biography from the Archives of askART: For John Atherton there was no line drawn between "fine" and "commercial" art. He painted pictures for advertisers, magazine covers, and galleries alike. All were characterized by his strong sense of design and color. Atherton was born in Brainerd, Minnesota, studied at the College of the Pacific, and the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. He first worked in a number of West-Coast art studios learning the basics of his craft. When he won a $500 first prize award in the annual exhibit of the Bohemian Club in 1929, it financed his move to New York. There, he began to do illustrations for advertisers, including General Motors, Container Corporation of America, and Shell Oil, and covers for Fortune, Holiday, and The Saturday Evening Post. His first one-man show was held in Manhattan in 1936. In the "Artists for Victory" show in 1943, his painting, The Black Horse, won the $3,000 fourth prize from among 14,000 entries. It now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. His work is also represented at the Whitney Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Chicago Art Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo, and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford. Atherton's great avocation was fishing. He tied flies of original design expertly, was a member of the Anglers' Club, and author of a book, The Fly and the Fish. His death occurred while he was on a salmon-fishing trip in New Brunswick, Canada. He was survived by his wife, Maxine Breeze. Original Vintage WWII Poster Buy A Share in America by Atherton 1941

        Est: $300 - $700

This American war bond poster is unique and interesting for several reasons. It was created and distributed before the United States formally entered WWII, and its overall aesthetic is a bit of an outlier in typical designs of the era. It is clearly an homage to the WPA era advertising posters of Lester Beall in its use of simplified forms and photo montage. This design went on to win a design competition held by the Museum of Modern Art. John Atherton (1900 - 1952) was an American graphic designer, painter and illustrator. Having studied at College of the Pacific and California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, Atherton, as a student, worked in a number of art studios where he acquired the knowledge to further his career as a professional artist. Atherton is best known for his work featured on many covers of the Saturday Evening Post from 1942 to 1961. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

JOHN ATHERTON (1900-1952) AMERICA HAS PLENTY IF IT IS USED WISELY! 1943. 36x22 inches, 92x58 cm. U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. Condition B+: replaced losses and minor staining at edges; repaired tears and restoration at edges and along vertical and horizontal; minor abrasions in bottom right image. Atherton was a graphic designer and a surrealist painter. He is best remembered for his poster promoting the 1939 New York World's Fair, and his award-winning Buy a Share in America poster from 1941. He went on to design many covers for The Saturday Evening Post, Fortune and Holiday. This image, with America's resources arrayed on a flag whose perspective leads the viewer's eye towards the rifle and military equipment in the foreground, is a gem of American mid-century design. For a government publication, which by definition would have been produced in very large numbers, this poster is uncommon.
