  • Rêverie / Méditation. 1897.
    Mar. 26, 2023

    Rêverie / Méditation. 1897.

    Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: JANE ATCHÉ (1872-1937) SIZE: Each: 14 3/4 in./37.3 cm DESCRIPTION: Created the same year as Mucha's more famous Têtes Byzantines, Atché's similar diptych Rêverie & Méditation may actually be superior to the Czech master's work. These two feminine profiles appear to be designed with the Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic in mind, rather than the Byzantine; Atché employs a greater sense of the English medieval, and a greater concentration on foliage as organic form rather than aesthetic embellishment. Their presence is absolutely radiant. (2) (Art Nouveau)

    Jane ATCHE (1872-1937)

  • Job. 1896
    Sep. 21, 2014

    Job. 1896

    Est: $5,000 - $6,000

Artist: JANE ATCHÉ (1872-1937) Size: 39 5/8 x 54 1/4 in./100.8 x 137.8 cm Imp. Cassan Fils, Toulouse Of Atché's half dozen known posters, this one for the cigarette paper firm is her most spectacular. We get the lyricism of Art Nouveau in the handling of the green dress and the smoke, combined with a compelling Lautrec-esque management of the solid black cape as it slashes through the design. This is the larger format version of the poster.

  • Chocolat Vincent.
    May. 03, 2009

    Chocolat Vincent.

    Est: $2,000 - $2,500

The charm of this Atché poster for Chocolat Vincent is abundant. We catch a young couple in the midst of a romantic interlude, perhaps even mid-proposal, with the rather serious, somewhat feminine, young suitor offering an exquisite bar of chocolate to his glowing intended. With the bees swarming around their hutches in the background, can there be any doubt that the key to winning the heart of any lady fair is with a romance as sweet as the Provencal honey used to create an award-winning bonbon. "We know just enough about Jane Atché to be intrigued. She was born in Toulouse, worked in lithographic prints-at first in black and white only, later in color-and earned an honorable mention at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français in 1902. Her scarce posters all disclose that Mucha was obviously [a strong influence]" (Wine Spectator, 101). Abdy, in fact, considers Atché one of Mucha's two best followers in France (p. 100

  • Poster: JANE ATCHÉ (1872-1937) JOB. 1889. 57 x 42 inches. Cas
    Dec. 19, 2007

    Poster: JANE ATCHÉ (1872-1937) JOB. 1889. 57 x 42 inches. Cas

    Est: $7,000 - $10,000

JANE ATCHÉ (1872-1937) JOB. 1889. 57 x 42 inches. Cassan Fils, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases, overpainting and restoration in image. Atché was born in Toulouse. While most artists of the day eventually moved to Paris in an attempt to achieve national, or even international recognition, she chose to remain in this Southern French city. She might have languished in obscurity if she hadn't been discovered by Joseph Bardouin, the owner of Job rolling paper. He was a tireless scout for new talents to help promote his brand (employing Cheret, Pal and Mucha), and might well have met her at the Cassan Fils printing plant in Toulouse. For this image, Atché designs a supremely elegant and stylistic vision of a sophisticated woman languidly enjoying a cigarette. The image is bereft of exaggerated Art Nouveau details, with the exception of the smoke. (In a smaller version, that exists without text, the smoke appears as a halo around the woman's head, or perhaps a noose . . . ). Atché's posters all reflect this same devotion to Mucha's style and despite some research which suggests they were also personally acquainted, her work carries its own signature look. In addition to its artistic qualities, this image also has social significance, in that it was one of the few images produced at the turn-of-the-century that depicted a positive image of women smoking, representing an important advancement in modern women's rights. • Poster: JANE ATCHÉ (1872-1937) [HOLLY AND MISTELTOE.] Two pan
    Dec. 19, 2007

Poster: JANE ATCHÉ (1872-1937) [HOLLY AND MISTELTOE.] Two pan

    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

JANE ATCHÉ (1872-1937) [HOLLY AND MISTELTOE.] Two panels. 1899. Each approximately 29x18 1/2 inches. Condition varies, generally B+: each with expertly restored margins. Framed. Although these two decorative panels are previously undocumented, it is not a surprise to learn of their existence. Based on the run-away commercial success that Mucha had with his decorative panels, many of his followers, and other artists, chose to try their hand at the medium. Atché herself is known to have designed at least one other pair, Rêverie et Meditation. That these two images have never surfaced before is an indication that they were a commercial failure, which is difficult to understand, as they are so artistically compelling. While the influence of Mucha is clear in the designs to a point, Atché has her own personality that comes through in the designs. The two women are treated with far less exuberance than Mucha would have afforded them, the Holly and the Mistletoe are not overwhelmingly exaggerated and, perhaps most interestingly, Atché does not employ strict vertical symmetry. The image of Holly has a wide-open space at the top, with a distant view of the Pyrennees, and Mistletoe is set against a backdrop of trees. They are both highly inventive and decorative works in a pure Art Nouveau style.
