Barbara Astman belongs to a visionary group of artists who have continued to radicalize visual culture since the early 1970s by defining new ways of seeing. Over four decades, she has explored a wide range of photo-based media and produced work, which has received national and international recognition. She is represented in important public, corporate and private collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Deutche Bank, New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Her artist’s archives are held in the E.P. Taylor Research Library & Archives, AGO. Astman has an extensive and prestigious solo exhibition and major group exhibition history. She has completed several public art commission in Toronto, Berlin, and the Calgary Winter Olympics. Active in the Toronto arts community, Astman has served on numerous boards and advisory committees, including of the AGO. She has degrees from the Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Craftsmen, and Ontario College of Art. She has been a professor at OCAD University in Toronto since 2001.

Among Astman’s most enduring artistic occupations is her employment and elevation of photography, a medium that underwent a dramatic shift in perception and assignment in the early 1980s and became more widely accepted within the visual arts. Evoking at turns humor and urgency, Astman’s adroit use of archetypal form, her consistent self-reflexivity, and her dexterous adoption of new technologies has helped establish her as a leading woman artist pursuing vulnerable self- and societal analyses through a still-evolving frame. Born in Rochester, New York, Barbara Astman arrived to Canada in 1970, and three years later, graduated from Ontario College of Art, where she has taught since 1975. Her recent solo exhibition, dancing with che: enter through the gift shop, toured parts of Canada through installations at the McMaster Museum of Art, MOCCA, and Kelowna Art Gallery, between 2011 and 2013. Astman's collection of vintage postcards figures prominently in her Paris Postcards series from 2001, wherein she fuses nostalgic images of a time and place with her unique use of photographic processes to create a new visual narrative. The collage-like #11 Vichy presents viewers with the opportunity to interpret for themselves the story this work is telling.Astman's work is shown and collected worldwide and is featured in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa); the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto); the Bibliotheque Nationale (Paris); and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London).
