    Attributed to John Astley (English, 1724-1787) PORTRAIT OF SIR CAPEL MOLYNEAUX BART oil on canvas inscribed with sitter's name lower right h:25.25  w:21.25 in. Provenance: Collection of Bank of Ireland Capel was the son of Sir Thomas Molyneux, 1st Baronet. In 1738 he succeeded his brother Daniel to the title of Baronet and to all the family estates except Castle Dillon, which he did not inherit until 1759. He was appointed High Sheriff of Armagh in 1744 and sat for Clogher in the Irish House of Commons from 1761 to 1768. Later he represented Dublin University (1776) and Clogher again in 1783. He was invested to the Privy Council of Ireland in 1776. John Astley studied with Joshua Reynolds in the 1740s under the artist Thomas Hudson. He later went to study in Rome and Florence in 1747 (one of his teachers was Pompeo Batoni), before establishing his career in Dublin, and later settling in England.

    John Astley English, 1724-1787 Portrait of a Lady Oil on canvas 25 1/4 x 21 inches (64.2 x 53.4 cm) Provenance: Private collection, Massachusetts A student of Thomas Hudson and Pompeo Batoni, John Astley was known as "Beau Astley" for his handsome appearance and ostentatious attire. He enjoyed a wide patronage among fashionable Londoners from the 1750s to the 1780s. An old handwritten label affixed to the stretcher of this painting reads: Miss Parsons/by Thomas Gainsborough/(1727-1788)/Maynard Collection.We are grateful to Piers Davies for his help in cataloguing this work.     JOHN ASTLEY (1724-1787)Portrait of a Lady, three-quarter length, seated holding a bookOil on canvas, 122 x 99cm The presumed subject of this portrait is Mary Smith of Tinny Park Co. Wicklow. She was at the centre of the parliamentary milieu in the orbit of the speaker W. B Ponsonby. Both her husband and son (later 1st Baron Tara of Bellinter, see lot ) were M.Ps ; her sister married Francis Mathew, later 1st Earl of Llanduff and through her mother's family she was related to the Skeffingtons, Viscounts Massereene. Astley, a friend of and influenced by Joshua Reynolds, spent three lucrative years in Ireland c. 1756-59 painting, according to Pasquin , the beauties of lerne, his masterpiece being the conversation piece of the Beresford family at Curraghmore. Her marriage to John Preston of Bellinter, M.P for Navan on 25th April 1758 could categorise this painting as a marriage portrait. Provenance: Bellinter House, Co. Meath and by inheritance
