They Have a World To Win.], a poster by Alexandr Apsit (1873-1944). VTsIK Publishing, Moscow, 1919. 94 x 72 cm.First of May became one of Apsit’s most popular allegorical posters, probably because the artist delivers his message by fairly simple means, without introducing any mythological elements. Stephen White mentions that ?it was used as a cover illustration for at least one edition of the Party Programme.”

    • APSIT, A. The Red Rifle, 1919
      Jun. 29, 2014

APSIT, A. The Red Rifle, 1919

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Krasnaya Vintovka [The Red Rifle], a poster by Alexander Apsit (1880-1943), with versed text by Demian Bedny. Published by the Publishing Department of the Revolutionary Council’s Political Directorate (“Litizdat”), Moscow, 1919. 69 x 53 cm.In the poster being offered, Apsit provides a deliberately folksy illustration of Demian Bedny’s lyrics for a new revolutionary song intended to replace the popular folk song Dubinushka [A Cudgel]. Bedny proclaims the old Dubinushka a melancholic song, born out of difficult life and despair - but “now the people have grown smarter, and are going after the former lords - and not with a cudgel, but with a rifle!”, etc. It is unclear whether Polonsky, the head of Litizdat, was particularly enamored by the Apsit’s illustrations (he later complained that Apsit “lacked true Revolutionary spirit”), but the poster had a very large run for the time - 25,000 copies. Bedny’s “revolutionary lyrics” were actively promoted by the Army’s propagandists (the poet writes in his memoirs that the idea to produce new revolutionary lyrics for old songs originated with Lenin himself), and provided a basis for many Litizdat PUR propaganda posters.
