LEONARD APPELBEE (1914-2000) Shell Tractor Oil/A Friend to the Farmer. This campaign promoting Shell tractor oil to farmers made use of birds that would be familiar in rural areas. Appelbee painted several of these, and here we see his pair of great spotted woodpeckers. As in his other images for Shell, we get not only superbly rendered detail in the birds, but a strong composition as well. Weiner, London
