Born in Padang Panjang, Indonesia, Mochtar Apin was a painter, print maker and graphic artist, a member of the Bandung School and a founding member of the progressive art movement Gelanggang Seniman Muda, Arena of Independent Artists, in Jakarta in 1946, promoting modernity and freedom in art and culture. He studied under Ries Mulder in Bandung, in the Netherlands and in Paris. He had numerous exhibitions worldwide including retrospectives in 1989 to 1990 and more recently at the National University of Singapore Museum in 2013. MOCHTAR APIN (Sumatra, Indonesia, 1923-1994). "Portrait. Oil on panel (painter's palette). Signed and dated in the upper right corner. Size: 27 x 36 cm. Mochtar Apin is considered one of the masters of modern Indonesian painting for being one of the fathers of Indonesian abstract art. He began his artistic training in a temaprana way, acquiring an education oscillating between local tradition and colonial education. In the early 1940s, he joined PERSAGI (Persatuan Ahli Gambar Indonesia) and later Keimin Bunka Shidoso, a cultural centre established during the Japanese occupation, to broaden his interests in painting. After the end of the Japanese occupation and the beginning of Indonesia's struggle for independence from the Dutch, Apin, along with others, founded Gelanggang. In 1948, Apin enrolled at the Technical Faculty, University of Indonesia where he became affiliated with Ries Mulder, one of the founders of the school who introduced him to the semi-abstract and cubist style. In 1951, he travelled on a scholarship to study in Holland and later, in 1953, at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Under the teachings of Ries Mulder, Apin began to develop an awareness of formal approaches in painting, examining and articulating propositions of visual structure, line, colour, medium and their relationships, to produce a play of geometric forms complemented by the use of bright, flat colours. Later, during his period in Paris, Apin became fascinated by the work of Victor Vasarely. In the 1960s, Apin reached a phase of maturity, marked by new complexities in his visual structure, with a play of density and intersecting geometric lines, finally shifting the emotive and painterly approach with the flattened forms in later works produced in the 1970s to achieve a geometric structure that is well-defined while acknowledging the two-dimensionality of the canvas and painting as an object (as stated by Yuliman, "Dari Citra", p. 254). In his abstract works, Apin experimented with the optical effects of colour.
