Attributed to JOSÉ APARICIO INGLADA (Alicante, 1770-Madrid, 1838) "The year of the Madrid famine". Oil on canvas. It has slight restorations and repainting on the pictorial surface. It has slight damages on the frame. Measurements: 113 x 147 cm; 139 x 175 cm (frame). This work follows the models established by the artist José Aparicio Inglada, entitled El año del Hambre de Madrid, which can be seen in the Museum of Madrid on loan from the collection of the Prado Museum, which defines the original work in this way: "This painting is the most famous of all those painted during the reign of Fernando VII and the most widespread in its time throughout the kingdom, due to its emblematic plot, which has an adulatorily propagandistic charge. More than a history painting, Aparicio's canvas is in fact a unique historical allegory, a modality in which the artist was a true specialist, conceived with the pretended solemnity of neoclassical aesthetics, about the dramatic situation of hunger that the town of Madrid had to endure during the Napoleonic occupation in 1811 and 1812, as well as the heroism and patriotic pride of its population in rejecting the aid offered by the invading troops. A group of French soldiers - the face of one of them rendered with an almost caricature-like ferocity - offer food to a group of ragged, starving Madrilenians. An old man holds a young boy on his shoulder while he gathers in his lap a woman who is already dead, together with her child. Next to the pillar with the inscription in gold letters proclaiming the loyalty of the people of Madrid to their king, others eat scraps and leftovers, while behind the main group, a young man with broad sideburns and a bicorn rushes at the Gabacho soldiers, held back by his wife, who is carrying their baby in her arms, crying for lack of food".
