AOYAMA 27' in red lower left Narrow wooden frame Overall dimensions, framed: 61 x 51 cm Good condition Appealing beach scene with fishermen and boats in harmonious colors, created during Aoyama's stay at the French Riviera; paintings by Yoshio Aoyama fetch up to 10,000 euros on the international auction market This painting by Yoshio Aoyama was created in 1927 whilst the Japanese artist was staying in Nice, on the Côte d' Azur. Here the painter was a student of Henri Matisse. The present work shows the view of a beach promenade. The Grande Bleue extends in the background, a few boats are lying on the beach and the viewer can discern the outlines of a couple of fishermen. The composition is defined by reduced forms and planes. Nonetheless Aoyama skilfully managed to capture the ambience of the Mediterranean in bold yet harmonious colors. The painting is in good condition. There is a tiny little hole in the canvas on the right and faint damp stains to the paint surface. Light craquelure due to age and some minor color flaking here and there can be seen. The work is signed and dated in red lower left 'Y. AOYAMA 27'. The frame is shows light losses along the edges. The framed work measures 61 x 51 cm, the stretcher frame measures 55.5 x 46 cm. Yoshio Aoyama (1894-1996) Yoshio Aoyama was a pupil of the Japanese master Tojiro Oshita and studied art at the University of Tokyo. In 1925 he traveled to Europe to continue his studies. Here he settled down in Paris where he joined the École de Paris. Within a circle of artists such as Picasso, Modigliani and Chagall, Aoyama was at the forefront of the European avant-garde. After moving to the French Riviera, he became a student of Henri Matisse in 1926, who influenced his work sustainably. Only rarely the artist showed his works in exhibitions, preferring the quietude of his studio. For almost a century Aoyama created an extensive oeuvre of predominantly floral still life, townscapes and garden views, which are characterized by a use of luminous color.
