London: T.Bensley for the author, 1797[-1815]. 10 volumes, 4° (280 x 220 mm). Letterpress title to vol.1, 10 engraved titles, 664 fine hand-colored engraved plates by Andrews, 64 folding (some plate captions and numbering shaved with loss, occasionally just affecting the image area, some light offsetting, occasional pale spotting). Contemporary green half morocco, flat spines gilt, marbled boards, edges uncut (some light wear to extremities). FIRST EDITION. A fine series, highlighting the exotic species, which "...made a contribution of lasting importance to the literature of botany and horticulture by providing records and means of identification of a great diversity of beautiful and interesting plants, many of them new to science" (Hunt). As usual any printed titles for vols.II-X have been discarded in favor of engraved titles, more unusually, vol.I includes both the printed and the engraved titles. The text is by John Kennedy, Adrian Howarth and George Jackson, the plates, by Andrews, include a large number of species from South Africa, including 47 proteas and 26 ixias.
