IB ANDERSEN (1907-1969). BYGGE OG BOLIG. 1929. 33x24½ inches, 83¾x62¼ cm. Chr. Cato, [Copenhagen.]

    Est: $3,500 - $5,000

For an exhibition of "Construction and Housing," Andersen shows us just that - a superb, architectural rendition of a room seen via a cut-away view. The artist's familiarity with the Avant-Garde movements of Europe is clearly on display, both in the near-Bauhausian backdrop of a black and white cityscape and in the tribute to De Stijl in the primary colors of the buildings and sky. Politiken. 1965.

    Est: $800 - $1,000

ARTIST: IB ANDERSEN (1907-1969) SIZE: 24 1/4 x 68 in./61.7 x 172.2 cm PRINTER: Henrik Sandbergs Stentrykkeri, København DESCRIPTION: Ib Andersen, the son of Denmark’s preeminent poster artist, Valdemar Andersen, fell naturally into his father’s profession, creating around two dozen graphically-aggressive posters during his career. Strongly influenced by Cubism and the Bauhaus School, his images are more works of art than simple advertisements. Here, this two-sheet design for Politiken, the second-largest newspaper in Denmark, implies that in a fast and confusing universe, only Politiken remains fixed and clear. (Modern; Literary)

    IB ANDERSEN (1907-1969). INSULITE. 1931. 42x33 inches, 106x83 cm.

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

IB ANDERSEN (1907-1969) INSULITE. 1931. 42x33 inches, 106 3/4x83 3/4 cm. Condition A- / B+: creases in margins and image; sharp creases along horizontal fold; light offsetting in upper image; slight time-staining at bottom edge. Paper. Andersen, son of the famous poster designer Valdemar Andersen, was a prominent Danish graphic artist and illustrator who designed several Danish banknotes that were in circulation until the mid-1990s. His Cubist and Bauhaus-inspired style lent itself very well to depicting architecture, a subject of which he was quite fond. Here, advertising a brand of insulating material, he masterfully lays out the organized chaos of a large city in a sophisticated geometric style. The all-purpose product can be used to "isolate against heat, cold and sound," and by depicting the clamorous city rising peacefully into the sky, Andersen suggests the efficiency of the product. This appears to be an early proof or variation of the poster, pulled before the addition of all of the text.

POSTER: IB ANDERSEN (1907-1969) DANSK ETERNIT. 1938. 67x25 inches. Recato, Copenhagen.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,800

IB ANDERSEN (1907-1969) DANSK ETERNIT. 1938. 67 5/8x25 inches. Recato, Copenhagen. Condition B+: repaired tears and creases in margins and image; minor restored losses in margins. Two sheets. Japan. This lot and the following lot, while separated by seven years, share many striking similarities. The product being advertised is construction cement, used on the roofs of buildings. Andersen, whose style could be archly modernist (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction #2006, lot 62) here utilizes a hyper-realistic image of modern architecture. It is a lifeless and motionless still life in which the white surface of the roof attracts the viewer's eye, separating the sky from the structure.
