The canvas is slightly baggy at the upper edges and bears a small hole on the left. The frame is bumped. The framed dimensions measure 59 x 73.8 cm, while the size of the canvas is 51 x 65 cm. Robert Amrein (1896-1945) Robert Amrein was born in 1896 in Zurich. After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter at his father’s business, he worked there for a while. For one semester he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich and also self-educated himself. For a short period, he was pupil of Augusto Giacometti at the Academy in Florence. After that he dealt with expressionism. As landscape painter he traveled to Tessin (1916, 17, 18), Sienna, Athens (1920/21), Paris (1927) in Spain and Greece. The pale white colour has its counterpart in the rest of the composition with softly coloured houses, trees and meadows. The outlines of a mountain chain are seen in the background, creating a stark contrast with the light blue, cloudy sky. The painting displays traces of age and wear. The wooden panel is slightly bent and there is material loss on the edges. Three scratches are visible in the right edge of the picture; the panel has cracks.
