Emma Amos Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1937 - d. 2020

Emma Amos (16 March 1937 – 20 May 2020) was a postmodernist African-American painter and printmaker.

Amos was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1937[1] to India DeLaine Amos and Miles Green Amos.[2] Amos took an interest in art at an early age, creating "masses of paper dolls" and learning figure drawing from issues of Esquire and the art of Alberto Vargas, was painting the figure by the age of nine. Her mother had aspirations of Amos studying with Hale Woodruff, but he did not accept many private students and left the area before she had the opportunity to study with him.[3]

At eleven, Amos took a course at Morris Brown College, where she worked on her draftsmanship and took note of the work that African American college students were producing at the time. [4] By high school, Amos was submitting her work to Atlanta University art shows. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta at the age of 16, and applied to Antioch College, because of their progressive policies.[3]

Her father exposed her to black intelligentsia; Zora Neale Hurston frequently visited and W.E.B. Du Bois once called on the family.[4]

Education:
Amos studied at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, at the Central School of Art and Design in London and at New York University.[4][5] While at Antioch, Amos worked for half of the year, and studied for the remainder. She worked in Chicago, New York, and in Washington, D.C., which enabled her to visit galleries and museums, which had been less accessible in Atlanta. Her fourth year at Antioch, she went to England and studied at the London Central School of Art, where she learned to print and etch under Anthony Harrison, and began to paint with oils, which she had not done before.[6] Amos received her BFA degree from Antioch in 1958,[7] then went back to London for her degree in etching, which she received in 1959 after two years of study.[7][6] The following year Amos moved to New York City to start working with two printmaking studios.[8] Later on she received her MA at New York University (NYU).[7]

      EMMA AMOS (1938 - 2020) Untitled.

      Est: $20,000 - $30,000

EMMA AMOS (1938 - 2020) Untitled. Oil on linen canvas, 1958. 30x24 inches; 762x600 mm. Signed in oil, lower right recto. Signed and dated in pencil on the stretcher bars, verso. Provenance: private collection, Mexico. This striking abstraction is one of the earliest Emma Amos paintings we have seen. Amos likely painted this work in the spring of 1958 when she was a senior studying fine art at Antioch College in Ohio. Amos spent her fourth year abroad at the London Central School of Art, studying printmaking, painting, and weaving. After receiving a BA from Antioch, she returned to the Central School to earn a diploma in etching in 1959, and continued to pursue abstraction. She explored the boundaries of color and space and was influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. She subsequently moved to New York where she joined the artist collective Spiral, founded by Romare Bearden, Hale Woodruff, Norman Lewis and Charles Alston, as the sole female member. Another abstract oil painting from this London period, Shepherd's Path, 1958, was included in her retrospective Emma Amos: Color Odyssey, organized by Shawyna Harris in 2021 at the Georgia Museum of Art.

She was born and raised in Atlanta, and took an interest in art at an early age. Amos made these early prints after she returned to London's Central School of Art and Design to continue to study printmaking. During her fourth year at Antioch College in Ohio, from which she received her B.F.A. degree in 1958, she first went to England and studied etching at the Central School. According to Amos, "I really think I found and stopped worrying about myself as an artist my second year in England--etching and the whole idea of printmaking and having a handsome, a well-thought-out and finished work that satisfies you." In 1960, Amos moved to New York to work with two printmaking studios, joining the printmaking studios of Letterio Calapai (a part of Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17, Paris and New York) and Robert Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop. Despite her difficulties as an African American woman in the New York art scene at the time, Amos persevered and received her M.A. from New York University in 1966. While at NYU, she became reacquainted with Hale Woodruff, with whom she had tried to study with in Atlanta, who was a professor there at the time. Woodruff helped Amos with her printmaking and introduced her to Spiral, a collective of approximately fifteen prominent African American artists, with whom she exhibited in 1965 at their first and only exhibit, in a rented gallery space at 147 Christopher Street. During the 1970s, Amos went on to teach textile design at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, New Jersey, and gained prominence weaving on her own looms at Threadbare, a yarn and weaving shop on Bleecker Street, New York. She later became a Professor at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, New Jersey.

      Emma Amos (1937-2020): Untitled

      Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Fabric collage, 1991, signed 'Amos' and dated along the side, signed and dated on the reverse. 11 x 11 in., unframed. Note: The photographic image in the background of this fabric collage is described by the artist on the reverse as "Off to college at 18 years old, India's friends--Atlanta 1926". Emma Amos was born in Atlanta and her childhood in the South as the granddaughter of two grandfathers who were both born as slaves figures heavily in her work. Trying to connect her experiences with her work, Amos said "I hope that the subjects of my paintings dislodge, question, and tweak prejudices, rules, and notions relating to art and who makes it, poses for it, shows it, and buys it. The work reflects my investigations into the otherness often seen by white male artists, along with the notion of desire, the dark body versus the white body, racism, and my wish to provoke more thoughtful ways of thinking and seeing."

      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

EMMA AMOS (1937 - 2020) Untitled (Topsy or Curly). Screenprint on velvet with fabric border, 2001. 431x457 mm; 17x18 inches. Edition of 6. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, New York (2013). This print serveed as a maquette for Curly Topsy and Topsy Curly, 2001, a diptych of wall hangings that Amos produced. They were later exhibited at Flomenhaft Gallery in New York in 2010. Untitled (Topsy or Curly) was likely inspired by the folk tradition of Topsy-Turvy dolls that originated in the antebellum South and remained popular through the mid-20th century. These two-in-one dolls always hid one figure while the other was visible and frequently paired white girls in pigtails with Black "mammies" wearing headscarves. The fraught history of the Topsy-Turvy doll may have informed Amos's diptych, where acrobatic power dynamics are mapped onto racial differences.

EMMA AMOS (1937 - 2020) Paper Sack Brown. Pastel and acrylic over monotype on buff wove paper, circa 1982. 1041x762 mm; 41x30 inches. Signed in pastel, lower right. Titled in acrylic, lower edge. Provenance: private collection (1983). Paper Sack Brown is a significant Emma Amos work on paper that eloquently explores issues of color and representation in art. The title refers to "the brown paper bag test", the colorist discriminatory practice of comparing skin tone to the color of a brown paper bag. As an African American woman and a woman of mixed race, Amos was deeply aware of the complex meanings of color in American society. The model's pose echoes classical figure studies - but only up to a point. Amos didn't paint nudes - she found the depiction of the female nude sexist and unequal. In a 1995 Art Papers interview with Mildred Thompson, Amos explained: "I had rejected black female nudes in particular. Their unclothed figures reminded me too painfully of the slave market, of black people as objects, of women as the powerless other. I like the concept of dressing the figure, of clothes as culture." By redefining the muse as a woman of color in Paper Sack Brown, Amos demonstrates how ideas of beauty and color have become interwoven in visual culture. Paper Sack Brown is closely related in subject, composition and media to another work on paper, Dixie Peach, 1982, which was included in the artist's recent retrospective Emma Amos: Color Odyssey.

EMMA AMOS (1938 - 2020) Beauty. Monotype in ink on velvet with a hand-painted African fabric border, 2001. 1626x641 mm; 64x25 1/4 inches. Printed by Kathy Caraccio, New York. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, New York. Illustrated: Sharon Patton, "Emma Amos: Art Matters" Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art, Number 16/17, Fall/Winter 2002, p. 41. Beauty is part of Emma Amos' series of images of strong female figures in silhouette and on a non-Western support of hanging fabric. Emma Amos has sought to deconstruct traditional representations of beauty with her depictions of women. She also embraced experimental techniques as a painter, master printmaker and weaver - here with an unusual use of acrylic in monotype. In her article on the artist, Sharon Patton describes the process as a stencil hand-cut by Amos that was inked and printed with master-printer Kathy Carracio. Amos' idea for this hybrid technique came from the sculptor Terry Adkins, who had described to her the painting of acrylic mediums on silk as a block-out for screenprinting. Patton p. 41.

EMMA AMOS (1938 - 2020) Water Baby. Acrylic and fabric collage on linen canvas, with Kente cloth border, 1987. 711x560 mm; 28x22 inches, Signed and dated in acrylic, lower right recto. Signed, titled and dated in ink on the canvas overflap verso. Provenance: acquired from the estate of Mary Myers Cole, the wife of art dealer Sylvan Cole; private collection, Connecticut (2009). This bold 1980s canvas by Emma Amos displays her technique of incorporating fabric within painting, and is part of her visual representation of feminism in paint and fabric. Water Baby is part of a significant body of 1980s work by Emma Amos depicting African American women in bathing suits or swimming. While attending New York University in the 1960s, Amos was the first female artist invited to join Spiral, the collective of African-American artists founded by Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis, and Charles Alston. In the 1980s, Emma Amos made a series of images of African-American women swimming. She has long sought to deconstruct traditional representations of beauty, and has embraced experimental techniques as a painter, master printmaker and weaver. Her paintings have recently been acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum, and were included in the traveling museum exhibitions We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women 1965-1985 and Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power.

Both images relate to a series Amos created between 1990-1994; a series of forty-eight watercolor portraits of women in the art world. The image reveals two concerns that played a role in the artist's life: relationships with people close to her and skin color: We're always talking about color, but colors are also skin colors, and the term colored itselfit all means something else to me. You have to choose, as a black artist, what to make your figuresI find that I almost never paint white people. Butterscotch, brown, or really blackbut rarely white. White artists never have to choose (REF: Gumbo Ya Ya, An Anthology of Contemporary African-American Women Artists, intro by King-Hammond, 1995) 12 x 12 inches

EMMA AMOS (1938 - ) Josephine and the Ostrich. Diptych of color monotype, stencil and color pastels with collage and metallic ink on thick buff wove paper, 1984. Rives BFK watermark. 762x591xmm; 30x23 1/4 inches (sheet), left panel; 762x33 mm; 30x21 inches (sheet), right panel. Signed in green pastel, lower right, right panel, and dated and titled in white pastel, lower edge, left panel. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, New York. This striking mixed media diptych by Emma Amos celebrates Harlem Renaissance icon Josephine Baker and her ostrich. In 1926, Baker famously rode through Berlin in an ostrich-pulled cart - an image which was captured in a photograph taken in front of the Hotel Adlon. Emma Amos used representations of the iconic Josephine Baker in her 1980s to break further boundaries in the representation of beauty and African-American women. In a related painting Josephine and the Mountain Gorillas, 1985, Amos imagined Josephine Baker literally walking through an Abstract-Expressionist color field painting followed by two gorillas. Amos sought to further deconstruct traditional representations by embracing experimental techniques as a painter, printmaker and weaver. Her paintings have recently been acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum, and were included in the traveling museum exhibitions We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women 1965-1985 and Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power.
