PROPERTY FROM THE DON J. ANTONIO ARANETA COLLECTION Country Road signed and dated 1943 (lower right) oil on canvas 14” x 20” (36 cm x 51 cm) WRITE UPOne cannot discuss the history of Philippine genre painting without the mention of the name Pablo Amorsolo. The younger brother of the eminent Fernando Amorsolo, Pablo was born in Daet, Camarines Norte. Like his kuya, Pablo also learned the rudiments of art from his uncle, Fabian de la Rosa. He then pursued formal fine arts training, graduating from the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts in 1924, where his brother worked as an instructor. Pablo would also become an instructor himself at the said university. During the 1930s, the golden years of illustration in the country, Pablo became one of the most sought-after editorial illustrators of his time, working for famous magazines including Graphic, Tribune, La Vanguardia, Herald, and The Manila Times. His artist’s biography in the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Encyclopedia of Philippine Art, as succinctly rewritten in Kayumanggi: Biographies of Philippine Visual Artists, states that Pablo’s “illustrations, which portrayed a wide variety of domestic and social situations, contributed to the rise of genre art in the country,” since periodicals were the leading forms of mass media in those simpler times. The work at hand from 1943, painted in the midst of the Japanese occupation of the country, is characterized by its similarity to De la Rosa’s style of painting, marked by the application of subdued, cooler colors. The mountain’s silhouette in the background, likely Mount Labo in Pablo’s native Daet, is seemingly covered in a misty haze, effectively adding an atmosphere of enigma and mystique. The work is an image of an idyllic Philippines, evoking a desire to return to a sense of normalcy before the holocaust of war struck. The Kayumanggi book notes that “a large number of his works were destroyed in a fire in 1945,” making the work at hand a rare insight into the genius of a master of Philippine genre painting. Jan. 23, 2021

Pablo Amorsolo (1898 - 1945) Portrait of Ildefensa S. Santiago

      Est: ₱180,000 - ₱234,000

Pablo Amorsolo (1898 - 1945) Portrait of Ildefensa S. Santiago signed and dated 1944 (lower right) 11 1/2” x 14 1/2” (29 cm x 37 cm) Provenance: Previously owned by Geronimo Santiago, Sr (my great grandfather) and given to his son Geronimo Santiago, Jr.(my grandfather’s younger brother). Then given to me, Nick Joseph Santiago. Geronimo Santiago, Jr had no children. Pablo Amorsolo, Fernando Amorsolo’s younger brother, was already exposed to art at an early age. His family moved to Manila when he was eight, and his uncle, Fabian de la Rosa, became his mentor at drawing. Pablo also graduated from the UP School of Fine Arts in 1924; he served as assistant instructor in the said school until World War II broke out in the 1940s. One of the best portrait painters of his time, Pablo Amorsolo painted people from all social classes and ages. Despite not escaping from comparisons with his older brother’s craft, his works were nonetheless distinct for its straightforwardness, emphasis on forms and lines, and defined shape and contour. These features that mark Pablo Amorsolo’s oeuvre are in contrast to Fernando Amorsolo’s idealized depictions of local subjects and genre scenes. The younger Amorsolo is also known for supporting not just classical art but also modern forms of expression, creating historical and genre scenes popular before the onset of WWII. Several of his works, however, did not survive, hence the rarity of this particular portrait. During the prewar years, portraits were popular, and Pablo Amorsolo depicted his subjects through refined brushwork and consistently truthful detailing of features.
