Sculpture
Levi Amidlak was born in 1931 and has spent his life in the settlement of
Inukjuak. As the son of the carver, Samwillie Amidlak, Levi became
acquainted with the art form at an early age; he began to carve in his
mid-teens and has been moderately productive since that time.
Levi's work is deeply-rooted in the heritage of the Inuit. He tends to
portray the secular world of his culture, such as solitary hunters and the
animals of his region; his favourite subjects are birds. Frequently, to
enhance the facial features of his sculpture, Levi inlays the eyes, and
delineates the whiskers and teeth with ivory; he also creates details with
delicate incising.
Levi feels that in spite of how difficult carving is, it has become an
integral feature and a means of expressing modern Inuit culture.
Levi's sisters Louisa Kutchaka and Sarah Paulosie are also carvers.
