Artist Robert Wesley Amick worked as a lawyer for two years before devoting his life to a career in art. He was born in 1879 in a Colorado log cabin home, and his early life in cattle country included interaction with cowboys, livestock, Native Americans, and homesteaders. After his 1909 graduation from The Art Students League in New York City, he published illustrations in contemporary popular periodicals. However, his childhood influences soon began to dominate his artwork.

Robert Wesley Amick's paintings and prints for sale depicting Western American themes were reprinted and used in U.S. schools in the 1920s, cementing his artistic reputation. Eventually, he moved to Connecticut where he painted landscapes of the countryside.
