        ALVES DE SOUSA (1884-1922)

        Sculpture group. Patinated plaster. Unsigned.. Attributed to. Small failures. We believe that we are in the presence of a study for the monument to the "Peninsular War" (1807-1814) and the tragic disaster occurred in Porto: the collapse of the barge bridge that crossed the River Douro under French heavy bombardment. In fact this depicition is similar to the existing one in the monument at Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square, built between 1909 and 1951, and designed by architect Marques da Silva and sculptor António Alves de Sousa. However due to his sudden death in 1922, sculptors Henrique Moreira and Sousa Caldas were called to substitute him.
