GERMÁN ÁLVAREZ ALGECIRAS (Jerez de la Frontera, 1848-1912). "Study for character. Ink on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 17 x 11 cm; 31 x 25 cm (frame). Formed in School of Fine Arts of Cadiz in 1868, Germán Alvarez Algeciras received a scholarship to complete his studies in Rome. In the Italian capital he attended the Chigi Academy and the International Center of Fine Arts, where he frequented the circle of painters close to Fortuny and met José Jiménez Aranda and José García Ramos. In the eternal city he recreated the monaguillista theme like almost all the Spanish costumbrista painters of that time, following Fortuny. In 1876 he returned to Spain and took up residence in Seville. During these years he frequented few exhibitions, although he showed his works in the neo-Gothic style in the fish market of the Sevillian city. In 1879 he returned to Jerez de la Frontera, participating very actively in the artistic and public life of the city. He became director of the Academy of Fine Arts of Santo Domingo between 1885 and 1901, and the main architect of the boom that this institution acquired; he held the position of president of the section of Fine Arts in the Scientific, Literary and Artistic Athenaeum from 1897 to 1900. He was also dedicated to politics. His work is currently housed in the Museum of Fine Arts of Malaga and other important institutions.

Measures: 7 x 10 cm; 28.5 x 31.5 cm (frame). Apprenticed at the Cadiz School of Fine Arts in 1868, Germán Alvarez Algeciras received a scholarship to complete his studies in Rome. In the Italian capital he attended the Accademia Chigi and the International Centre of Fine Arts, where he frequented the circle of painters close to Fortuny and met José Jiménez Aranda and José García Ramos. In the Eternal City he recreated the altar boy theme like almost all the Spanish genre painters of the time, following Fortuny. In 1876 he returned to Spain and took up residence in Seville. During these years he exhibited infrequently, although he did show his works in the Neo-Gothic style in the Seville fish market. In 1879 he returned to Jerez de la Frontera, taking a very active part in the artistic and public life of the city. He became director of the Santo Domingo Academy of Fine Arts between 1885 and 1901, and was the main architect of the institution's rise to prominence; he was president of the Fine Arts section of the Scientific, Literary and Artistic Athenaeum from 1897 to 1900. He was also active in politics. His work is currently housed in the Malaga Museum of Fine Arts and other important institutions.

He was the nephew and heir of the famous Minister of Finance of the Queen Regent María Cristina, Juan Álvarez Mendizábal. He was born in 1848 in Jerez de la Frontera and studied in Cádiz, in Jerez and in the Italian capital, Rome. In 1879 he centers his life in Jerez, dedicating himself to teaching and creating the best of his work; concurring to the National Exhibition of 1874 with the picture The return of Gólgota and in 1877 to that of Seville with After the desserts and The last rehearsal of a drama also known as "The king's jester". Alfonso XII (under whose reign Jimena was granted the title of city) acquired this painting,
