Johan Coenraad Altorf (1876-1955), This carved relief panel with polychrome decoration was created to commemorate the marriage between the then Princes Juliana and Prince Bernhard (Juliana was later to become Queen of the Netherlands between 1948-1980). , A carved wooden panel, ca. 1937, Netherlands, 51,5x27 cm, A commemorative panel by Altorf (oak wood, painting, 51.5 x 27 cm). by Pier TerwenThis panel was made by Altorf on the occasion of the wedding of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard zur Lippe Biesterfeld on January 7, 1937. The heraldic coats of arms of the young couple are beautifully and sharply reproduced in high quality in an extremely refined manner. The symbolism of the scene: the coats of arms of the newlywed young couple stand on either side of the sturdy trunk of the orange tree (with orange apples as rich fruits of the kingdom) that contains the national coat of arms of the Netherlands. In fact, the young couple 'carry' the wealth of the Kingdom. The panel is undated but the comemorative aspect indicates that it was made in or 1937. To give the panel a festive look, Altorf added colour and gold to it. There are a number of spoon boxes and panels in cabinets designed by Kropholler, in which he also applied colour to his carving work in a surprising way. It was not that Altorf was strongly 'royalist', but the occasion gave him the chance to create these special works for customers who perhaps were. During the research into Altorf's oeuvre that has been ongoing since 1987, a small number of such commemorative panels of the wedding have been registered. They were available for purchase at the gallery of Nieuwenhuizen Segaar in The Hague. All the panels from this group are different but the symbolism carries the same message. ,

J.C. Altorf (1876-1955), Ivory, the seated monkey holding her young in a firm embrace, on a low oval plinth, inscribed with the artist’s monogram to the back of the plinth. With this small piece executed in ivory, Altorf presents the viewer with a touching symbol of motherhood. While the young is lovingly protected under a thick tuft of fur, the mother also seems calmed and at ease, her eyes seemingly closed. Our piece is one of various small sculptures of animals executed in ivory that Altorf produced during the course of several decades. Because of their dimensions and brilliant white colour, they invite the viewer to inspect them up close. These sculptures proved to be attractive and desirable conversation pieces; we know that Altorf made several small ivory animals for his clients, and presented and sold them at exhibitions, such as the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art in Turin in 1902. Moreover, these ivories proved striking embellishments of decorative ensembles, such as finials on pieces of furniture, as exemplified by the walnut cradle designed by Johan Thorn Prikker and executed by Altorf in 1901 (collection Kunstmuseum The Hague).Albert Plasschaert (1874-1941), renowned Dutch art critic and contemporary of Altorf, was very much impressed by the small ivory sculptures of animals. In an issue of the monthly Onze Kunst from 1904, Plasschaert writes the following on the pieces:And again and again it strikes me to see a very personal expression emerging from these few objects […] a tendency towards a clear form, as simple as possible; it has a decorative side because it simplifies everything, and yet expresses exactly what it wants to do, despite its austerity.(En het gebeurt mij toch telkens opnieuw dat ik uit deze weinige dingen een zeer persoonlijke uiting zie komen […] een neiging tot een klaren vorm, zoo eenvoudig mogelijk; het heeft een versierende kant door dat het alles simplifieert en toch wat het wil uitdrukt niettegenstaande zijn soberheid.), A small carved ivory group of a monkey and her young, ca. 1909, H 10 cm, With warm thanks to Mr Pier Terwen for his contribution, Comes with a CITES EU certificate. Johan Coenraad Altorf (1876-1955), A carved wooden relief depicting three monkeys, the middle monkey appearing ill and being comforted by the other two. Signed with the Altorf monogram in the right hand side along the edge. In early family correspondence this piece is referred to as the panel titled 't zieke aapje' (the sick monkey), A carved wooden panel 'the sick monkey', ca. 1930, Netherlands, 40x24,8 cm, Provenance: By repute this piece was bought directly from the artist in the 1930's and was passed down through the family to the current owner by descent. A relief depicting some monkeys (oak wood 40x 24.8 cm). By Pier TerwenThe sculptor Johan Coenraad Altorf (1876-1955), produced subjects in relief, always carved in very fine, high-quality oak, especially in the period just before the Second World War.  He often chose animal subjects. Representations with Civic coats of arms, comemorative objects and depictions of saints are also found but less frequently. Altorf was often to be seen in the Hague zoo, where he studied the animals and was inspired to apply them in his work. He always used a highly abstract approach to this portrayal. In a number of cases he made carved panels for furniture. The furniture was initially made by himself, but later it was designed by the architect A.J. Kropholler (1881-1973) who lived in Wassenaar.[1]  The smaller individual panels can certainly be seen as an important addition to the sculptor's income during the 'lean years' preceding the Second World War. The representations had a strongly illustrative character and the subjects were often contained in a low border. The images were often projected slightly over the border, a visual trick that creates a feeling of depth. In fact, it was a device that we can already see in early Egyptian reliefs.[2]  The panels were often sold by the Hague art dealer Nieuwenhuizen Segaar, where they remained in stock until after the war. These small panels also display how extremely expertly they have been executed. And the composition of the scenes is often endearing, such as the group of monkeys crouching together on this panel. [1] The furniture designed by Kropholler was assembled by third parties; the panels were placed in the construction of the furniture by the furniture maker.[2] Altorf liked to visit the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden for the Egyptian sculptures and classical and. ,

Johan Coenraad Altorf (1876-1955) and Chris Lanooy (1881-1948), This creamy coloured high glaze pottery figure was designed by J.C. Altorf and executed by the potter Chris Lanooy. Produced in a limited edition of 9. Signed with a triangle in underglaze blue with the initials A (for Altorf), L (for Lanooy) and B (for Bremmer). During 1911 and 1912 Altorf and Lanooy cooperated in producing a range of animal subjects in small limited editions, including a bison, an elephant and this parrot.  , 'Papegaai' (Parrot), as a pottery figure by Chris Lanooy, 1912, Netherlands, H ca. 34 cm, Cockatoo, Altorf and Lanooy, (h. 34 cm) by Pier TerwenThe very well-known sculptor Johan Coenraad Altorf (1876-1955) and the equally well-known ceramist Chris Lanooy (1881-1948) met because they both lived in the circle of the Hague 'art pope' H. P. Bremmer.[1] Bremmer became intensely involved in the work of both artists and this led to the three of them discussing the production of a series of ceramic animal figures. The animal figures were modeled by Altorf and cast in clay and fired by Lanooy. This group of small statues also included the cockatoo model, a copy of which will be auctioned in this sale. The bird was produced in 1912, cast in semi-porcelain and provided with a transparent or slightly white glaze. The specimen in the auction has a light tint that is reminiscent of the color of ivory. Altorf regularly made impressive birds from ivory. The various ceramic models of the other sculptures in the series were made in different types of clay and glazes.[2] They were signed with a joint mark painted in cobalt blue at the bottom with the letters around an equilateral triangle: A, B, L. and in this case within the triangle the edition number (9x) and the year. In this case, 1912. The cockatoo also features embossed signatures of both artists on two sides of the base. Due to the clay type (semi-porcelain) chosen for this sculpture, the birds appear quite fragile. It is interesting to see what remains of the nine copies that Altorf and Lanooy made in 1912. Since 1986, research has been conducted into the whereabouts of works from Altorf's oeuvre and over the years it has become apparent that eight of the nine specimens of the cockatoo are still known.[3] Four of them are in museum collections and the other four are with private collectors.[4] The copy in this auction was registered in 1987. Over the years, these cockatoos have been regularly published and, of course, Bremmer himself has also written about this work.[5][1] H. Johan Coenraad Altorf (1876-1955), 1911, Netherlands, a silver commemorative plaque mounted on a stone base as a paperweight, Paperweight with silver plaque family Ribbius Peletier by P.A. Terwen (1) In 1911, sculptor J.C. Altorf (1876-1955) was commissioned by Mr and Mrs Ribbius Peletier-Wybelingh from Utrecht to design a paperweight to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. Gerlachus Ribbius Peletier (1856-1930) belonged to the wealthy industrial class of Utrecht, due to his famous cigar factory NV Koninklijke Tabak- en Sigarenfabriek Peletier. He and his family lived in a spacious home on Maliebaan 15 in Utrecht and had a great appreciation for the modern art of that time. This was exemplified by the eight Van Goghs in their collection. (2) The plastic arts were also of great interest to the couple and their collection held works by all leading sculptors of that time. Naturally, this also included Altorf. The collectors were in contact with famous art critic H. P. Bremmer (1871-1956) who without a doubt was the person who introduced Altorf to the couple. The paperweight became the first artwork they commissioned directly from the sculptor. In 1926 Altorf created another piece (in the form of a bronze owl sculpture) to commemorate their 40th wedding anniversary. Altorf chose for the paperweight a flat design, most likely after consultation with the commissioner, which meant there was a lot of space for symbolism and text. The symbolism is dominated by a tree of life with the names of the couple: G.RIBBIUS PELETIER A.L.WYBELINGH, curled around the trunk, as though symbolising the couple’s wedding rings. There are two snails towards the lower edge of the image. These creatures carry multiple symbolic meanings. For instance, they leave a trail, just like the parents of a family. This is why the snails are depicted towards the lower edge of the image as the basis for the entire symbolism of offspring applied to the artwork. There is a symmetrical ‘fertile’ meadow visible behind them, with two large flowers to symbolise the parents. (3) The five flowers hidden within the rich foliage of the tree symbolise the five children of the family (four girls, with one bigger flower symbolising the boy, the eldest child). The rays of the rising sun in the background fill the remainder of the space, as a symbol of a happy life. The borders on the left and right are filled with strong climbing plants, while the horizontal border bears the years of this fruitful marriage: 1886 27 MEI 1911. The object has a base made of Comblanchien (a type of French limestone) with ribbed sides. The corner details consist of narrow quarter cones, which taper towards the top (two of which are damaged). The plaque is secured in each corner with a silver nut and bolt, the bolts having rounded tops. The silver is not visibly marked by its manufacturer. There was no reason to do so, since it concerned a private commission. Altorf did sign the work on the stone base, with his personal monogram JA. Presumably, these plaques were difficult to cast and finish, due to the exceptionally clean and refined design. Therefore, they had to be made by using the electrotyping process (galvanoplasty), which allowed for five exact copies of identical quality. (4) This is a very economical way of working, when producing an edition. The work might have been executed at the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Fabriek van Gouden en Zilveren Werken J.M. van Kempen & Zonen, in Voorschoten, who are known to have utilised this technique and this firm had also worked on projects for the family before. All five children received a paperweight of their own with their name engraved on the lower edge. (5) This particular paperweight was made for the eldest daughter Davina (her mother’s name was also Davina). It was subsequently passed on to her daughter Mrs Davina van Wely (1922-2004). (1) Terwen is an art historian whose field of research concerns the sculptor Altorf (2) L. Van Tilborgh and M. Vellekoop, Van Gogh in Utrecht, the collection of Gerlach Ribbius Peletier (1856-1930), in: Van Gogh Museumjournaal 1997-1998, p. 27-41. (3) It is possible that Ribbius Peletier, as a Remonstrant (member of the Remonstrant Society, a liberal Christian denomination), suggested the use of the grass in the background as a reference to the Bible text for 1 Peter 1:24 “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of the grass”. (4) A model of the plaque used for production still exists and can be found in a private collection. (5) Supplementary information kindly provided by Prof. Mr Dr A. W. Reinink, The silver plaque: 11,5x8,5 cm, the stone base: 12x9,5cm, total height 2,2 cm,

These oak panels gave an opportunity for collectors who were eager to acquire something from the sculptor, but perhaps could not afford a sculpture. Unlike these panels, figures and sculptures by Altorf have always been expensive. Certainly in the 'time of scarcity' shortly before and after the world war, the production of such panels was a solution for the artist to make some sales. J.C. The material was ideal for the sharply detailed creations as he liked to make them. He used the ends of elephant tusks to depict herons like the one offered here. The bird is shown in a tight, waiting position for its prey. This figure clearly shows how the sculptor could stylize a representation of a subject to the utmost.
