Die büssende Maria Magdalena Öl auf Leinwand. 81 x 68 cm. In einer Höhle sitzend die büßende Heilige in weiß-gelblichem Gewand, attributiv mit langen gewellten blonden Haaren vor einem Kruzifix, danebenliegend ein aufgeschlagenes Buch, ein Salbgefäß und ein Schädel. Sie hat die linke Hand ergeben auf ihre Brust gelegt und bedeckt diese gleichzeitig mit einem Teil ihres Gewandes. Mit ihren glänzenden dunklen Augen blickt sie ehrfurchtsvoll auf das Kreuz. Das Licht fällt von links oben in den Raum und beleuchtet ihr zartes, fast weißes Inkarnat der rechten Körperhälfte, die damit gegenüber dem dunklen Hintergrund besonders herausgestellt wird. Rest., Retuschen. Anmerkung: Der Künstler wurde in Neapel als Sohn des Bäckers Michael Hohenberg geboren. Ab 1672 hielt er sich zu Ausbildungszwecken in Rom auf, wo er sich mit der „neoklassischen“ Malerei von Annibale Carracci und Guido Reni beschäftigte. 1684 wurde er von König Johann III Sobieski als Hofmaler nach Warschau berufen. Bei dieser Gelegenheit italianisierte er seinen Namen, da Italiener zu dieser Zeit als Künstler bevorzugt wurden. (1330755) (18)
