        ARIEL RUIZ I ALTABA (1962) Untitled, 2003. From the "Re-Production" series. Ensemble of 4 original photographs. Ferrotypes. Each 24.2 x 24.2 cm (visible measurements); total dimension 48.4 x 48.4 cm. Verso fully signed and dated. Original artist frame. Provenance: - Acquired directly from the artist. - Swiss private collection. "Re-production shifts the meaning of originality from the variation in imagery (content) to that of the supporting media (part of the context). In contrast to digital printing where error rate is minimized to trick the viewer to ignore the reality of the image and focus on its message. Re-production presents unique, hand-made dry plate ferrotypes, in which the uniqueness and originality of each piece is more critical than content to the point of replacing its meaning. In these images of hydra, stem cells, bones or eroded shells - each carrying the promise or the history of a life - error rate is maximized, re-producing originals by design, and giving them new lives in the viewers’ eyes." Der mexikanische Photograph wuchs in Barcelona auf, absolvierte das College und doktorierte an der Harvard Universität in den USA. Seit 2000 nahm er an mehreren Gruppen- und Einzelausstellungen teil. Seine Werke sind in zahlreichen nationalen und internationalen Museen und Sammlungen vertreten, unter anderem der Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris, dem Museum of Fine Arts, Houston oder dem Museum of Fine Arts, Philadelphia. Ariel Ruiz i Altaba lebt und arbeitet in Genf, wo er neben seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit als Professor an der Universität Genf lehrt.
