Rudolf von Alt, View of Nuremberg with the Gothic Fountain and the Parish Church of St Lawrence

        Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Signed and dated lower left: R. Alt 864. Rudolf von Alt was born with artistic talent and a love of travelling. His father before him was already a veduta painter and Rudolf von Alt, born in 1815, was to follow in his footsteps to become the leading exponent of this genre in Austria. His fame and international success can be seen in the geographical reach of his numerous journeys. Initially he travelled around Vienna with his father and made the obligatory trip to Italy as a young artist; then to the various regions of Austria, and soon afterwards to the extended regions of the Austrian Dual Monarchy; finally we see him travelling, exhibiting and receiving honours throughout Europe. In fact, hardly a year went by in which Rudolf von Alt does not visit, sketch, and paint a new city in watercolours and oils - Nulla dies sine linea. In 1863, Rudolf von Alt travelled to the Crimean Peninsula on behalf of the Tsar. The following year he undertook another long journey, this time to Kissingen, Salzburg, Venice and Nuremberg. During his stay in Nuremberg, he painted the view of St Lawrence with the ‘Beautiful Fountain’. Two watercolours showing the fountain have survived, dated 26 June and 2 August 1864 (see Walter Koschatzky and Gabriela Koschatzky-Elias: Rudolf von Alt, Vienna 2001, p. 381). They illustrate how Rudolf von Alt captured the monuments of the cities he visited in drawings and watercolours in order to later turn them into paintings.

(Vienna 1812–1905) A View of Melk Abbey on the Danube with an Equestrian and Fishermen in the Foreground, signed R. Alt, watercolour on paper, 21 x 14.5 cm, mounted, framed We are grateful to Dr. Maria Luise Sternath-Schuppanz for the scholarly advice. The important watercolorist Rudolf von Alt was born in Vienna on 28 August 1812 as the eldest son of the painter Jakob Alt. He learnt together with his brother Franz in his father's workshop and was entrusted with artistically responsible tasks at an early age. He attended the Vienna Academy at the age of just 13 and was a pupil of Josef Mößmer. Numerous journeys with his father through Austria, Germany, Italy and the Crimea resulted in many important commissions. However, Rudolf von Alt's marriage in 1841 prompted him to seek out subjects closer to home so as not to leave his young wife behind in Vienna for too long. He painted in Melk, Stein an der Donau and Dürnstein. In 1842, the artist also took his wife, who was expecting a child, into consideration and mainly produced watercolours in the surrounding area. However, Hermine suffered a miscarriage and a year later, in November 1843, the young wife died of puerperal fever during the birth of her second child. In 1844, Alt's reputation was at its peak and he received one commission after another. In 1845, the watercolourist produced numerous small views of the Danube region and the Wachau. In the same year, Rudolf von Alt once again found happiness in his private life and fell in love with Berta Malitschek from Troppau, whom he finally married in 1846. The marriage lasted 35 years and five children were born. The artist was an family man and happy in his familiar circle. His daughter Louise was an important support to him, especially in the last years of his life. Rudolf von Alt died on 12 March 1905 and was buried in Vienna's Central Cemetery.

Verso confirmation from Louise Alt, May 23, 1906: “I confirm that this picture depicting Gastein was painted by my father Prof. Rudolf v. Alt in 1830” Verso confirmation from Alfred Wawra: “Purchased at our auction on April 13, 1906 (Lipp); I herby guarantee that it is a work by Alt and comes from his estate. Alfred Wawra” In 1830, the almost 18-year-old Rudolf von Alt traveled alone for the first time to the picturesque “hotspots” of the 19th century, to the Salzkammergut and Bad Gastein, which was just beginning to develop into one of the most famous health resorts in the monarchy. The journey marked a decisive turning point in the young painter's artistic approach. The independent search for suitable viewpoints, the immersion in the respective motif changed his understanding of how reality can be transformed artistically. This watercolor with the view of the Gastein waterfall, in a particularly close view, is a special example of this metamorphosis from careful approach to artistically free interpretation. A meticulous but lively drawing with soft lines captures the architecture of the Straubinger Hütte with one of the first large bathing establishments in the town. He captures the trees in a charmingly naïve, baroque manner; just the gliding of the light over the branches, the attractive play of shadows on the facades, the white, transparent smoke and the subtle scent of a warm, sunny sky demonstrate the artist's new free gaze. The young Alt is completely in his element when drawing the water. With astonishing certainty he captures the roar, the spray, the coolness of this elusive element, which at the same time gives the painting its dramatic beauty.

(Vienna 1812-1905) A View of the Upper Belvedere, Vienna, signed, dated R. Alt(1)872, watercolour, opaque white on paper, 24.7 x 37.5 cm, framed Provenance: Sale, Sotheby’s, London, 22 November 1988, lot 12; Art Trade, Peter Kovacek, Vienna 1989; Collection of Dr. Otto Glaser (1926–2017), Dublin, Ireland; His heirs - Private Collection, Ireland. A certificate issued by Mag. Peter Kovacek, March 1989 is available upon request. The Belvedere Palace in Vienna, built in two baroque building complexes between 1714 and 1723 by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt on behalf of Prince Eugene, is undoubtedly one of the most important cultural monuments in Austria. The architecture of the upper Belvedere, originally built on the border of the outer line wall, today's Wiedner Gürtel, is of particular attraction. The individual pavilions of the elongated building fit together in a moving rhythm, held together by an unusually playful roofscape that gives the building its unmistakable silhouette. The imperial art collection - today in the Kunsthistorische Museum Vienna - was housed here since 1776 and, like the park, has been open to the public since 1781. It is almost surprising that in Walter Koschatzky's catalog raisonné, this famous Baroque ensemble only appears five times in Rudolf von Alt's work. He painted it in variant views, the lower and upper palace as well as the interior rooms. The present painting is not included as it has not appeared in the art market before 1989. In 1872, Rudolf von Alt, in his 60th year, was at the peak of his art. With his pointed brush, he virtuously captures the complex structure of the castle; ingeniously, the dramatic play of clouds underscores the baroque theatricality as well as the unique magic of the architecture. The numerous staffages of visitors and elegant strollers lend to its timeless aesthetic the charm of the moment and the touch of a bygone era.

Literature: Arthur Roessler, Rudolf v. Alt, Verlag Karl Graeser, 1909 pl. 50. The Minorite Church on the square of the same name near Vienna’s Hofburg is a Gothic courtly building from the late 13th century. The elaborately designed main portal on the west façade, modelled after the French style, was built around 1350 and is separated from the side nave portals by two mighty buttresses, which were bricked up as early as 1513. In Walter Koschatzky’s catalogue raisonné, this remarkable monument of the late Gothic period in Vienna is mentioned as a motif only three times - in 1846, 1848 and 1852. The present watercolour from 1846 is the only one to be documented with an illustration. It is described on the reverse as a ‘study’, which the painter drew on the spot with quick, impulsive brushstrokes. This gives this particular sheet its exciting freshness and lightness. The painter has assessed the subject with an experienced eye and taken a sideways position, placing the towering but largely unadorned façade of the former mendicant church diagonally and filling the space in the picture field. The almost dizzying mightiness of the building, whose sharp line stands out against the emptiness of the white sheet at the top, is also emphasised by the contrast with the neighbouring lower buildings. These are depicted in detail with a fine brush and brown ink, while the painter generously applies the watery grey and brown tones with a broad brush to the façade, playfully alternating between areas of light and shadow. It is unsurprising that this singular piece was acquired by the most important collectors of the late 19th century - Jakob Gsell, Georg Plach and Ludwig Lobmeyr.

Feldscharek” and “Ueber Anregung des Gemeinde-Vorstandes von Hernals durch die Union - Bau - Gesellschaft ausgearbeitet nach dem Projecte des behördlich autorisirten Civil-Ingenieurs Frierich Stach, Director der Union-Bau-Gesellschaft.”, watercolour on paper, 87 x 120.5 (mat window), original frame Provenance: Private Collection, Austria Friedrich König (1842-1906) and Rudolf Feldscharek (1845-1919) opened a joint architectural practice in 1874, having already made a name for themselves with buildings and interiors in the neo-Gothic style (among other things they designed the Villa Paulick on Lake Attersee, where Gustav Klimt would later spend his summer holidays). The two architects soon turned to Rudolf von Alt to visualise their projects. Von Alt is known to have made several architectural prospectuses in the 1870s, but only a few of this size. This watercolour presented him with an unusual and challenging task: he was to render the large-scale project, a connecting road between Vienna and the suburbs of Dornbach and Hernals along with their neighbouring developments, in a vividly illustrative manner and from a bird’s eye view encompassing the entire urban area of Vienna. In 1875, the smaller suburbs behind the former city wall had not yet been incorporated into the city, but negotiations were underway and large construction companies such as Bau-Union were already working out precise plans. A prerequisite for the incorporation of Dornbach had been the enclosure of the Als stream, which was begun in 1873 and completed in 1899. This resulted in one of the widest boulevards in Vienna, today’s Hernalser Hauptstraße. The architects planned a magnificent straight avenue with buildings, villas and gardens, which the painter depicted vividly in this watercolour with many charming individual details, such as the horse-drawn tramway that connected Dornbach with Vienna from 1865. Alt also reproduced the recognisable neo-Gothic church in two other, smaller, watercolours commissioned by the architects (cf. Wien Museum and Dorotheum, sale on 28. 4. 2014, no. 274). Alt creates a subtle but effective detail through the use of light: over large parts of the city, clouds work to darken or dim the light; attention is drawn to the new boulevard, the only spot to lie in bright sunlight. The development of what would later become the 17th district ended up taking a different course. Rudolf von Alt’s impressive architectural prospectus is therefore a unique document offering a visionary yet utopian view of the Vienna that could have been.

Schab, New York/Vienna. Catalogued in: Walter Koschatzky, Rudolf von Alt. 1812–1905, Salzburg 1975, CR 47/21. In autumn 1874 Rudolf von Alt rushed to Venice, where he stayed at the Hotel d'Italie (probably the forerunner of the later Hotel Bauer on the Grand Canal) until mid-November. He had spent the whole year working on commissions for the Ministry of Culture in Vienna and Graz, and the months in Venice finally allowed him to paint his favourite motifs - especially St Mark's Basilica - without any constraints. He rarely took time for new subjects - unless a view captivated him as much as this one of the magnificent façade of the Ca’ d’Oro on the upper course of the Grand Canal. He captured it from the fish market opposite, the Campo della Pescaria. It is early in the morning; a fine haze still lies over the smooth water in which the windows of the buildings are reflected in rhythmic movement. The neighbouring palaces are bathed in a delicate, iridescent blue; only the polychrome marble slabs of the Ca’ d’Oro reflect the first light of day in a ‘golden’ brown-red light. This watercolour is one of the most enchanting Venetian atmospheric paintings in Rudolf von Alt’s oeuvre.

This watercolour seems to be the model for the steel engraving by F. Würthle, which was published by Paterno in Vienna around 1860. Another lithograph (by X. Sandmann for L. T. Neumann, no date) with the same subject seems to be based on the undated pencil drawing by Rudolf von Alt in the Wien Museum (inventory no. 30531). The predecessor of the Greek Orthodox Church was remodelled by Theophil von Hansen in 1856-1861 at the behest of Georg Simon von Sina. It is difficult to say when the porch with the octagonal tower and the dome was actually completed. It is possible that Rudolf von Alt “visualised” the church according to the architect’s plans and designs. This approach can be observed time and again in Rudolf von Alt’s watercolours. We are grateful to Dr. Maria Luise Sternath for the scholarly advice.

(Vienna 1812–1905) Self-Portrait, 1886, signed, dated R. Alt (1)886, verso old notes about provenance on the mount, watercolour on paper, 35.5 x 25.5 cm, framed Provenance: Collection Louise Alt (1859-1941), Vienna, artist’s daughter; Collection Gabriele von Miller-Aichholz (1859-1921), Vienna; Sale, Albert Kende, Vienna, 10 December 1927, lot 231; Since then Private Collection, Vienna. Compare: Self-Portrait of the Artist, 1886, Albertina Vienna, inventory no. 30720. The important Austrian watercolourist and landscape painter Rudolf von Alt was particularly interested in producing self-portraits. Walter Koschatzky has noticed 17 self-portraits in his catalogue raisonné, which were created irregularly over a period of seven decades. Rudolf von Alt painted the first ones in the 1830s, and then only again from 1883 after he had turned 60 years old. From then on, however, he dealt artistically with himself at least once a year, which is a documentation of aging and critical personality analysis that is unique in Austrian painting of the 19th century. Von Alt painted the last portrait in 1904, one year before his death. The majority of these images are now in the collections of the Albertina and the Wien Museum. As a result, it is a minor sensation that, after more than 100 years in private hands, a previously unknown and hitherto unpublished self-portrait of Rudolf von Alt has come to the market. It is dated 1886 and could represent the last of the three portraits that we already know to have been created in this year (Koschatzky Nr. 86/01, /02 und /03). His hair has become even more silvery in comparison to earlier images, interspersed with fine blue strands that match the strong blue of his eyes. The artist is sitting square on to the viewer, wearing a black suit with a waistcoat, white shirt and black bow tie. He is sitting in his studio or salon, the outlines of a picture wall are dimly discernible. The entire focus of the light and painterly subtlety is on his face, with its vividly modulated features and the detailed drawing of facial expressions. The artist does not look at the viewer: his gaze passes us by, lost in thought, as if he were looking into another, invisible world of memories and images.
