Antonio Alonso Martinez, Mixed Media on Canvas, „España", 2012

      Est: €2,400 - €3,000

Mixed media; including oil, acrylic, fluorescent paint and polyester on canvas Spain, 2012 Antonio Alonso Martinez (b. 1963) - Portuguese-Spanish painter Signed and dated on verso 'Matinez 2012'; also titled 'ESPAÑA' Dimensions: 81 x 65.5 cm Provenance: Private collection, Spain Very good condition Impressive portrait of Picasso painted by the famous 'Martinez the Killer'; his works fetch up to €12,000 at international auctions The present portrait depicts Pablo Picasso and is a provocative and very characteristic painting by the Portuguese-Spanish artist Antonio Alonso Martinez. Head and chin of the iconic artist are bathed in red, while the middle part of his face and the background appear in bright yellow. The colors immediately evoke associations with the stripes of the Spanish national flag, which are ultimately supported by the inscription 'ESPAÑA' at the lower left. The message of the picture seems to identify Picasso as a child or even a hero of his country. But Picasso's keen view irritates and closer inspection of the painting shows that his pupils are even emphasized by white pinheads pierced through the canvas. Here, the portrait impressively unveils how Martinez uses the method of alienating his sitters in order to express allusions, possible questions or even criticism raised against the depicted persons, or at least against our perceptions of those people. The painting signed and dated on verso 'Martinez 2012' and also titled 'ESPAÑA'. The work is in very good condition with only minimal traces of wear. The size of the depiction is equal to the overall framed dimensions of 81 x 65.5 cm. Antonio Alonso Martinez (b. 1963) Martinez was born in Portugal in 1963 and studied painting in Lisbon. In his youth he was present, when his best friend was murdered at the age of eighteen. This shocking experience deeply influenced his later artistic output, since his portraits often deal with mortality. In 2011 Martinez moved to Spain, where he still lives and works. Est: €4,000 - €5,000

Mixed media (oil, acrylic paint, pastel, charcoal, iron plate, cardboard) on canvas Spain, 2011 Antonio Alonso Martinez (born 1963) - Spanish-Portuguese painter Verso titled, signed and dated 'Kate Moss Martinez 2011' With certificate of authenticity by the artist Overall dimensions: 61 x 50 x 6 cm (H x W x D) Very good condition Provenance: Spanish private collection A magical-morbid portrait of the British model Kate Moss by the hand of the celebrity painter, 'Martinez the Killer'; his artworks fetch up to 12,000 euros at international auctions The Spanish-Portuguese artist Antonio Alonso Martinez (born 1963) created this portrait of Kate Moss in 2011 in mixed media on canvas. At the young age of 14 years, Kate Moss began her steep modeling career and has since then conquered the runways all over the globe. That she is still as fascinating as she was in the early stages of her career shows for example the very successful auction held by Christie's this summer, when only portraits of the super model were sold. Although Kate has often hit the headlines because of her excessive lifestyle, this portrait shows that the beautiful British model - despite her expression being marked by the jag - remains an unmatched icon of the world of fashion. However, not only Kate Moss's slightly hazed expression makes this portrait a magical eye-catcher. The artistic process behind this work deserves particular attention. The seemingly fragmentary face of the supermodel appears to be carved out from the sculptural background consisting of black, lasered iron plates. The artist has often portrayed famous people from an unusual point of view; his best known portraits, besides Kate, are those of Kurt Cobain or George W. Bush, on offer in the next lot of this auction. The work 'Kate Moss' by Antonio Alonso Martinez is in very good condition with minimal signs of wear. The reverse is titled, signed and dated 'Kate Moss Martinez 2011'. The overall dimensions are 61 x 50 cm. The painting comes with a certificate of authenticity by the artist. Antonio Alonso Martinez (born 1963) Martinez was born in Portugal in 1963 to Spanish parents and studied painting in Lisbon. Martinez's best friend was murdered at the age of eighteen before his eyes. This shocking experience deeply marked him and is one reason why his portraits often deal with mortality. Since 2011, the artist has been living in Spain. The same year, one of his portraits of Kurt Cobain fetched a sensational result at the Dorotheum in Vienna.
