Attributed to Helen Allingham, RWS, British 1848-1926- A Thatched cottage on a country lane; watercolour heightened with white and scratching out on paper, 24.5 x 18.1 cm. Provenance: The Family of the artist, by whom given to Graham Robertson; The Property of the late Graham Robertson, Christie's, London, 22 July 1949 (as 'H. Allingham') (bought by 'Vicars'). Private Collection, UK. Note: Allingham enjoyed particular success as an illustrator, working for children's publications as well as periodicals such as 'The Graphic', and providing twelve illustrations for the 1874 serialisation of Thomas Hardy's (1840-1928) 'Far From the Madding Crowd'. Charming views of rural thatched cottages are typical of Allingham's output. She was also a close friend of the illustrator and watercolourist Kate Greenaway (1846-1901), with both artists drawn to the depiction of an idyllic and idealised view of rural England. Allingham enjoyed considerable success in her time, and in 1890 became the first woman to be admitted as a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society.

(BRITISH 1848-1926) The Primrose Path, Farringford, 1909 signed H Allingham (lower right) inscribed, signed and dated (on a label, attached verso) watercolour 29 x 17 cm PROVENANCE: Peter Nahum Ltd, Ryder Street, London SW1 Purchased from the above by the present owner in 1989 Farringford (Tennyson's House) Isle of Wight From the start the Tennysons were keen gardeners, with Alfred cutting the grass and rolling the lawns. He would not hear of cutting down the trees which guaranteed his seclusion. Some idea of the garden beds, full of flowers, can be seen in the paintings of Helen Allingham who illustrated The Homes and Haunts of Tennyson in 1905, after the poet's death. There were many visitors to Farringford, among them Prince Albert who arrived in 1856, just as the Tennysons were preparing to decorate the house and move in their furniture. Charmed, he left with a bunch of cowslips, promising to bring Queen Victoria over from Osborne. Regrettably, this never happened, although the poet made several visits to her. One famous visitor who did arrive was Garibaldi, who came in 1864, and planted a Wellingtoniana, a hugely tall fir tree, near the house. Paterson in the plate lower left corner, mounted, 35.4 by 44.8cm.; sold together with a Slazenger & Sons London cast iron regulation hoop gauge, 5.2 by 11cm., some wear to the white paint (2) Helen Paterson born on 26th September 1848, married William Allingham in 1874 and died on 28th September 1926. She became a very successful painter in watercolours as Helen Allingham, first woman artist to be elected to the Royal Watercolour Society in 1890. A recent exhibition of her work was held at the Watts Gallery, Guildford, in November 2017 to February 2018.
