      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

This lot is located in Chicago. Note: Francis Alleyne was a French emigrant who moved to Britain during the country's popularization of French style portraiture. He frequented the country houses of southeast England for work where he painted the likeness of members of the upper-middle class, including landed gentry, military officers and wealthy merchants, predominately in small-scale portraits of three-quarter length and oval format. Better known among English social circles than those of higher fine art, examples of his portraits can be found in the collections of the UK National Trust, Royal Marines Museum and Yale Center for British Art, in addition to numerous family collections.

      Est: £4,000 - £6,000

FRANCIS ALLEYNE (Active 1774-1790) A PORTRAIT OF THE REVEREND JOHN MUTTLEBURY IN FULL COURT DRESS Signed au verso on the stretcher. Oil on canvas. 37cm x 29cm oval Francis Alleyne was active in that raffish area of London between Soho and Covent Garden, Compton Street, between 1774 and 1790, where so many painters, gilders and carvers had their workshops. He specialised in small three-quarter length portraits, in the manner of Francis Wheatley R.A. , somewhere in size between a miniature and life size, which he exhibited in London. According to an old label on the reverse of this unlined canvas, the sitter, the Rev. John Muttlebury, was brought up with the children of George III. He broke his arm, whilst playing with them at St. James’s Palace and was, therefore, educated by the King and given the living in Broad Windsor.
