Born in Vienna but at home in the world, his spirit of discovery and the political circumstances in Austria drew him abroad. In 1938, he left Vienna and emigrated, eventually arriving in the USA in 1941, after passing through France, Spain, and Portugal. Even before his emigration, his travels took him to Italy, Yugoslavia, Russia, Switzerland, France, and Portugal. His life-affirming attitude can be aptly summed up by a quote from his role model Walt Whitman: “Keep your face always toward the sunshine, and shadows will fall behind you.” This philosophy is also reflected in his artistic approach, as Alescha believed that everything observable was equally worthy of being depicted. For in everything, the attentive individual can discover the magnificence of existence, even in things that may seem trivial to those without this perspective. His works, primarily created in pastel technique, are testimonies to this optimistic worldview and his passionate travels. He discovered early on his love for the South. The nature, climate, colors, and forms of Mediterranean landscapes and their vegetation captivated him. His pastels of Italy, Yugoslavia, and Switzerland, along with the rediscovery of Mediterranean landscapes and Alpine regions, make him a pioneer of landscape painting in his time. One of his travels took him to Ischia, the largest island in the Gulf of Naples, where he painted the steep coastal landscape of Sant'Angelo in delicate pink and blue tones. Above the steep cliffs, a serpentine road winds through the barren landscape. The area appears uninhabited; even the flat beach at the foot of the cliffs is deserted. With a finely nuanced and skillfully chosen color palette, he manages to evoke different atmospheres and moods. This travel scene contains no people, focusing instead on the interplay of nature and architectural elements in the landscape. The impressive pastel invites us to join him on his travels and, for a moment, feel as joyful and carefree as the artist himself.     Theodor Allesch-Alesha was born in 1989 in Vienna. After studying at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts; the artist undertook numerous study trips that took him to Germany; Russia; Switzerland; Italy; Netherlands ans Portugal. He created there works he showed at the exhibitions of Hagenbund. 1941 Allesch-Alescha emigrated to the USA; where exhibitions followed in New York and Chicago. After the Second World War; he returned in 1947 to Vienna. Here his artistic activity was supported by the City of Vienna by making available a studio and several image acquisitions.
