      James Edmund Allen (1894-1964) Kill Creek 1937 The lithograph published in an edition of only 25 prints is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right. James E. Allen (some sources have the middle name as Edward, some as Edmund) was born in Louisiana, Missouri. He worked as an illustrator, easel painter, writer, etcher and lithographer, having studied under Pennell. He participated in juried exhibitions around the US for nearly 30 years. Image measures 11.75 x 9 with a framed size of 21.75 x 19 inches.       James Edward Allen (American, 1894-1964) Harbor Oil on Canvas Painting. Oil on canvas is signed J.E. Allen 53, in lower left. Label for Kitchell Framing Hempstead, Long Island - New York on reverse. Painting measures 40 inches high, 36 inches wide. Frame measures 45.3 inches high, 41.3 inches wide. In good condition with one small patch at frame edge left center and light scattered touch up mostly in the sails. The painting is from the same estate as the Dean Cornwell oil painting being offered in this auction. From AskArt: James Edward Allen, a lithographic artist, painter, and writer, was born in Louisiana in 1894, dying in New York in 1964. His subjects included wild-life and are represented in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, Washington, D.C. He was also a contributor to art magazines. "Distress", one of his lithographs, depicts a railroad work crew struggling to put a derailed locomotive back on track during a storm. This latter work was published in "Collier's" magazine, September 17, 1938. It was exhibited in: "Life of the People: Realist Prints and Drawings from the Ben and Beatrice Goldstein Collection, 1912-1948", Library of Congress, 1999. Allen was born in Louisiana, Missouri. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and at Grand Central Art School where his teachers included Hans Hofmann, Joseph Pennell, Arshile Gorky, Harvey Dunn, and Nicolai Fechin. From brierhillgallery: Illustrator, lithographer and etcher James Edmund Allen was born in Louisiana, Missouri and raised in Montana. He studied drawing and painting at the Art Institute of Chicago, then went to New York for further studies at theArt Students’ League, the Grand Central School of Art, and the Hans Hoffman School. He studied with Joseph Pennell and William Auerbach-Levy. In the years prior to World War I, Allen worked as an illustrator for Doubleday, Page and Company, and contributed freelance work to leading periodicals including The Saturday Evening Post and Collier’s Magazine. He enlisted as a pilot during the war, and returned to his career after discharge. In 1925, Allen studied in Paris where he explored and perfected various printmaking techniques. He returned to New York during the Depression and worked as a commercial artist; during that period his work won widespread recognition, and Allen received prizes from New York’s Salmagundi Club, the Society of American Etchers, and the Philadelphia Print Club. He exhibited his work in galleries throughout the 1930s, including at the Kennedy and Grand Central Galleries. Allen later exhibited and acted as a juror for exhibitions at the Society of American Etchers. He died in New York City.
