Correggio Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1490 - d. 1534

(b 1489 Correggio, Italy; d 1534 Correggio, Italy) Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio after his birthplace, was a relatively unappreciated painter during his lifetime. Vasari alluded to Correggio’s anonymity in his biography of the artist, stating: “as he always lived apart, he was never portrayed by any other artist”. His style was a synthesis of High Renaissance technique and Baroque mood and feeling, though technically he worked during the Mannerist period in Italy and predated the beginning of the Baroque era. Correggio enjoyed great fame after his death, with his paintings being heralded for their drama and sensuality by artists such as the Carracci. His reputation reached its height with the Baroque and Rococo artists of the 17th and 18th centuries, as they saw a kindred spirit, especially in his handling of mythological themes.

J. Shearman, The Early Italian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, Cambridge and New York 1983, pp. 79-80). Art of Italy in the Royal Collection.

Antonio Allegri called Correggio (Correggio 1489 - 1534) follower of Ecce Homo Oil on canvas 46 x 36 cm The artwork in question, created during the 17th century, takes the detail of the face of Jesus from the Correggio's painting Ecce Homo, oil on panel (99 x 80 cm). The painting, datable around 1526, is now conserved at the National Gallery, in London.

JESUS AM ÖLBERG Öl auf Kupfer. 39 x 27 cm. Christus in glänzendem Licht“. Inv. Nr. 6506, ehemals Schlossgalerie Aschaffenburg). A.R. The left side of the painting is a copy of an original painting by Correggio held at Apsley House in London (oil on canvas, 38 x 41 cm). The original was held in the collection of Rodolfo Signoretti during the 1580s. It was later acquired by the House of Visconti and was then already copied by the Cremonese painter Giulio Campi (1502-1572). This copy is today held at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Milan. The original passed to the Marquis de Caracena before being taken to Spain, where it was admired by Anton Raphael Mengs before finally being acquired by the Duke of Wellington. This posture of Christ was copied by several artists, including Titian. Another copy of the painting is held in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, (oil on canvas, 35.6 x 26.8 cm, inv. no. 6506, formerly Schlossgalerie Aschaffenburg).

Follower of ANTONIO ALLEGRI DA CORREGIO, (Italy, 1494 - 1534); Spanish school, 17th century. "Ecce Homo". Oil on canvas glued to panel. It presents important faults and losses of the pictorial surface. Measurements: 34 x 27 cm; 48 x 41 cm (frame). The theme of the Ecce Homo belongs to the cycle of the Passion, and immediately precedes the episode of the Crucifixion. Following this iconography, Jesus is presented at the moment after being crowned with thorns and dressed in a purple robe (although it is barely visible here, in order to show the suffering of Christ's face more clearly). The words "Ecce Homo" are those pronounced by Pilate when presenting Christ to the crowd; their translation is "behold the man", a phrase by which he mocks Jesus and implies that Christ's power was not so great as that of the rulers who were judging him. Aesthetically, the composition of the face is reminiscent of the work by Antonio Allegri da Correggio (Italy, 1494-1534), now in the collection of the National Gallery, London.

60,5 x 46,4 cm. In dekorativem Rahmen.
