Paulette était une des filles du peintre. Il pourrait s'agir d'un des tableaux rapatriés après sa disparition par son ami Léon Guebels. Ce qui expliquerait l'absence de signature, et le tampon, que sa femme et sa fille avaient conservé. Dimensions : 68 x 46 cm - Peintre néo-impressionniste, aquarelliste et lithographe, il est également décorateur et illustrateur. Il suis une formation en gravure à l’Académie de Tournai et en lithographie à Bruxelles dans l’atelier de son père, il se perfectionne ensuite à Paris à l’Académie Julian auprès de Bourguereau et Adier, mais son vrai maître restera Jean-Paul Laurens. En 1909 et 1910 il séjourne en Bretagne et y découvre la lumière et les couleurs pures, son style, réaliste jusque-là, devient alors impressionniste. Il expose pour la première fois en 1910 à Paris avec « Les Indépendants », en 1912 avec « Les Artistes Français » et en 1924. Promu au rang de « Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur », Allard l’Oliver entreprend ensuite de nombreux voyages en Europe et dans les pays d’Afrique du Nord, comme l’Algérie et la Tunisie. Mais c’est au Congo, en 1928, que débute la troisième partie de sa carrière. Ses toiles africaines recréent avec dynamisme l’ambiance d’un moment fugitif, pittoresque de la vie coutumière à une époque révolue. La plupart de ses compositions sont campées en larges coups de brosse, inondées de lumière et éclatantes de couleurs. Il retourne au Congo en 1933, mais lors de son voyage de retour, il disparaît accidentellement en se noyant dans le fleuve alors qu’il était tombé du pont supérieur du « Flandre ». Principaux musées : plusieurs œuvres acquises par le Musée de l’Armée à Bruxelles, Musée des Beaux Arts Tournai et Musée de La Louvière.

Fernand ALLARD L'OLIVIER (1883-1933) MVKUMA-GOMBE-BUDO-MELO Portrait of an African. Oil on panel called "Pochade". This one dates from 1933, painted a few months before his accidental death in Congo. It appears in the March 1933 exhibition at the Saint Peter's Circle in Elizabethville, where it was probably sold. On the catalog is indicated Bengala (Bangala now) in brackets, it is the ethnicity of the subject represented. It was re-exhibited in December 1933, in the retrospective after his death, at the Cercle artistique de Bruxelles, indicated as belonging to a M Br. We thank Mrs. Geneviève Allard-Gouinaud, granddaughter of the artist and author of the book "Allard l'Olivier. From Tournai to Yanonge" for having contributed to the historical description of this work. Provenance: Brussels, Galerie Moderne, 23.11.2004, lot 367; Brussels, Horta, 12.02.2007, lot 159; Brussels, Horta, 12.01.2009, lot 154; Private collection, België Presumably inspired by the drawings entitled 'Dans les coulisses' by Felicien Rops. Around 1878, the Parisian bibliophile, Jules Noilly, asks the artist Félicien Rops to make two albums with drawings: 'Cent légers croquis sans prétention pour réjouir les honnêtes gens' and 'Album du Diable'. From the latter album, one drawing stands out, the sheet 'Dans les coulisses' (ill. 1). We see Satan, seated on a chair, watching/judging an almost undressed girl backstage at the theatre. This drawing will mark the beginning of Rops' 'satanic period'. In 2008, this drawing was acquired by the King Baudouin Foundation and donated to the museum in Namur. In this painting by Fernand Allard l'Olivier, entitled 'Humilité/ Contrition hypocrite' (Humility/ Hypocritical Repentance), we see a similar composition, with a naked woman who appears to be preparing herself in front of a toilet mirror with a dark figure observing her. Above the toilet mirror, we see the feet of Christ on the cross. Therefore, the naked woman could also refer to the figure of the weeping Maria Magdalena in a traditional depiction of the Lamentation. The title 'Hypocritical Repentance' could have a moralizing meaning. The woman, having committed sin, regrets her actions, and shows remorse. Hypocritical, however, for who else but the devil knows men better in his pursuit of pleasure and lust. He looks on amused because he knows that this sorrow will be short-lived. Rond 1878 vraagt een Parijse bibliofiel, Jules Noilly, aan de Naamse kunstenaar Félicien Rops om twee albums met tekeningen te maken: ‘Cent légers croquis sans prétention pour réjouir les honnêtes gens’ en ‘Album du Diable’. Uit dat laatste album valt één tekening op, nl. ‘Dans les coulisses’. We zien Satan, gezeten op een stoel, in de coulissen van een theater een bijna ontkleed meisje, bekijken/ keuren. Dit blad zou later zijn ‘satanische periode’ inluiden. In 2008 wordt deze tekening door de Koning Boudewijnstichting verworven en geschonken aan het museum in Namen. Het werk van Fernand Allard L'Ollievier verschilt echter in drager (doek ipv papier), materiaal (doek ipv pastel), het lichtgebruik en de afmetingen (210 x 160 cm). In het werk van Fernand Allard l’Olivier, getiteld ‘Humilité/ Contrition hypocrite’ (Nederigheid/ hypocriet berouw’) zien we een gelijkaardige compositie waarbij ditmaal een volledig naakte vrouw zich lijkt op te maken voor een toiletspiegel met een gehoornd figuur die haar gade slaat. Boven de toiletspiegen, zien we echter de voeten van Christus aan het kruis. Hierdoor zou de naakte vrouw ook kunnen referen naar de wenende Maria Magdalena zoals in de klassieke Lamentatie taferelen. De titel ‘Hypocriet berouw’ zou een moraliserend betekenis verraden. De vrouw, na de zonde, heeft spijt van haar daden en toont berouw. Hypocriet echter, want wie anders dan de duivel kent de mens beter in zijn streven naar genot en lust. Hij kijkt geamuseerd toe want hij weet dat deze nederigheid maar van korte duur zal zijn. Dit schilderij is opgenomen in de online catalogus ter voorbereiding van de oeuvrecatalogus van Fernand Allard L'Olivier.

La préface d'Henri Carton, ancien Ministre des Colonies, est emprunte d'un caractère colonialiste. En feuilles, sous chemise toilée bleue à rabats, titre doré, vignette contrecollée sur la couverture. Fernand Allard l'Olivier (1883 - 1933) uit Doornik is een van de Afrikanisten uit de twintigste eeuw, de zogenoemde latere jaren. Zij beelden de schoonheid van de Afrikaanse volksstammen af en leggen daarbij de nadruk op etnische verschillen. Tot aan het einde van de koloniale periode is deze realistische schilderkunst heel geliefd in Congo. Allard l'Olivier decoreerde het Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde Antwerpen

Fernand ALLARD L' OLIVIER (1883-1933). Etude africaniste au crayon située au Congo en 1927-28. D'une série de trois dessins. Ils ont été vus et authentifiés par madame Geneviève Allard, petite fille du peintre auteure du site documentaire lié à l'artiste (http://fernand-allard-lolivier.be). Madame Allard est également auteure avec monsieur Pierre Peeters de l'ouvrage "Fernand Allard-L'olivier. De Tournai à Yanonge aux éditions Wapica. Elle y reconnait la technique notamment au niveau des mains (comparatif fait avec une esquisse préparatoire de la sorcière d' Usumbura reproduite dans l'ouvrage). Néanmoins la signature figurant sur nos trois esquisses sont postérieures et pas de la main de l'artiste. Selon madame Allard les trois dessins sont bien l'œuvre de Falo (Allard l'Olivier) mais les signatures sont probablement de la main de son épouse qui authentifia plusieurs œuvres non signées après son décès.
