      • (Map - Colonial New England & Mid-Atlantic United States) Totius Neobelgii Nova et Accuratissima Tabula

(Map - Colonial New England & Mid-Atlantic United States) Totius Neobelgii Nova et Accuratissima Tabula

        Est: $11,000 - $14,000

Exceedingly Rare 2nd State Known in only 2 Other Examples. Colonial New England & Mid-Atlantic United States. Hugo Allard, Totius Neobelgii Nova et Accuratissima Tabula, 1674 (circa). Hand Color. This scarce map commemorates the Dutch re-capture of New Amsterdam in August 1673, which is illustrated in the large inset. This inset, known as the Restitutio View, replaced the original view (based on Visscher) in the second state of Allard's map. It depicts the town as seen directly from the east. On the right is a wall that eventually became Wall Street with its guardhouse and gate. Adjacent to the wall are new settlements and the Collect Pond. Along the quay are three roundouts fortified with canons and at center is a canal that is shown here for the first time. The Dutch army is depicted marching along the quay, a canon is firing from the fort, and the allegorical figure above holds a laurel wreath signifying victory. The map itself is from the influential Jansson-Visscher series, which formed the basis for the mapping of the Atlantic seaboard and New England for nearly one hundred years. The cartography follows Visscher's modifications and includes much new information that reflects the Anglicization that had occurred during the period of English rule (1664-1673). Lacus Irocoisiensis (Lake Champlain) remains radically misplaced to the east of the Connecticut River, the St. Lawrence River and Ottawa River are intertwined, and the coast of New England is still imperfectly mapped. Several of the new English place names appear, including Nieu Jarsey, Gamoenipa (Communipaw), Bergen, Nova Albania (Albany), Milfort, and Iamaica and Iorck-shire (Yorkshire) on Long Island. The Dutch fleet, commanded by Cornelius Evertsen, is shown off Long Island. This map is known in 7 states, of which this is the exceedingly rare second state, which Burden notes is only known in two other examples. This second state was published prior to Hugo Allard's imprint added at bottom right. All states are very scarce.

      • [GRAPHIC ARTS, PAINTINGS & DRAWINGS 16TH-19TH CENTURY] [THE FIVE SENSES] HUGO ALLARD I (1620-1684) (EXC.) "AFBEELDINGHE DER VYF SIENNEN"
        Jun. 24, 2021

[GRAPHIC ARTS, PAINTINGS & DRAWINGS 16TH-19TH CENTURY] [THE FIVE SENSES] HUGO ALLARD I (1620-1684) (EXC.) "AFBEELDINGHE DER VYF SIENNEN"

        Est: €2,500 - €5,000

Exquisitely handcoloured engraving depicting the five senses, with the address "Huych Allert" (= Hugo Allard I) and engraved description of the senses below the image, 23.5 x 31.5 cm. Professionally restored copy, re-margined with comparable laid paper in a way that is almost invisible recto and verso. A very attractive copy, with the stamped collector's mark of L. Lépingle (died ca. 1903) verso (Lugt 1731). Atlas van Stolk 2004; Van der Waals 135; cf. De Meyer p. 455 and Boerma, Borms et al, Kinderprenten, volksprenten, centsprenten, schoolprenten. Populaire grafiek in de Nederlanden 1650-1950, p. 350 (both only listing the re-edition by Reinier en Josua Ottens). Online, the Rijksmuseum also only lists an uncoloured copy in the Ottens edition (clearly printed from the same plate, from the Waller-collection) dating it 1726-1750. Theoretically, our edition could also have been published by Hugo Allard II (ca. 1673-1691), but the name variant "Huych Allert" on our print strongly indicates Hugo Allard I (cf. RKD). The beautiful and very rare engraving (not really a catchpenny print in the true meaning of the word) can be seen as as a merge of two very popular themes at the time of publication: the so-called "Steps of Age" (see for examples elsewhere in this auction) and the five senses: "T' gesicht", "De smaec", "T'gevoel", T'gehoor" and "De reuck", each visually depicted by couples smartly dressed in 17th century costume. Below the couples depicting taste, sense and hearing, the allegorical figures of faith, love and hope are depicted in arches inside the steps. Apart from the title, there are two cartouches in the top margin: "Den mens vyf sinnen noodich syn te scheyden t'goet van het fenyn" and "Gebruyckt u sinne tot Godts eer die anders doet raect to onneer".
