  • ALLAND, ALEXANDER (1902-1989) From a Portfolio of Black Jews in America

ALLAND, ALEXANDER (1902-1989) From a Portfolio of Black Jews in America

    Est: $3,000 - $5,000

ALLAND, ALEXANDER (1902-1989) From a Portfolio of Black Jews in America (from typed title). Group of ten vintage gelatin silver prints on original card mounts, each signed lr by Alland on mount below image, various sizes, most 8 x 6 inches (205 x 154 mm), each mount with protective tissue. Images in very fine condition; one protective tissue lacking. The Royal Order of Ethiopian Hebrews of New York, an Afro-American Jewish group in Harlem, was originally photographed by Alland as a 1941 commission from Life magazine. These portfolio images would appear to have been printed in the 1940s. An extraordinary group of photographs, remarkable for their rich tonality and the evident sympathy of the photographer for his subjects.
