Ce travail inconscient paraissait ne jamais devoir déclencher quoi que ce fût jusqu'au jour où Mohamed ben Allal fit son premier dessin avec des crayons de couleurs.... ...Le dessin était si charmant dans sa candeur et si riche de promesses qu'Azema l'encouragea à continuer et mit à sa disposition papier, crayons, gouaches et pinceaux. Mais il le laissa libre de dessiner et de peindre comme il l'entendait. Ce n'est pas là le moindre mérite d'Azema que d'avoir gardé cette stricte honnêteté artistique et de s'être refusé la moindre intervention..Les premières gouaches de Mohamed étaient on s'en doute, extrêmement naïves. Elles étaient souvent très belles et leurs tons étaient toujours d'une distinction déconcertante. On y rencontrait des trouvailles, des audaces de coloris invraisemblables.......» Bernard Saint Aignan, in la renaissance de l'Art musulman au Maroc, 1954, pp. 39 à 43. A self-taught Moroccan artist from Marrakech, where he was born in 1928, Mohamed Ben Allal was a craftsman and lute player in his youth. Employed as a cook by the painter Jacques Azema when he was just 16, Mohamed Ben Allal was taken under the artist's wing and introduced to painting. His fate is a troubling parallel to that of R'bati (cf. lot 23). But it was during an exhibition at the Mamounia Palace in Rabat that an American art lover bought around thirty paintings from him, which were successfully exhibited in Washington in 1952. His works recreate the environment of the street, the medinas and the kasbahs, with ochre, mauve and sepia colours. His painting is narrative, mingled with his imagination and childhood memories. Often regarded as a ‘naive art’ artist, his work was recognised in 1962, when he won a prize in Saigon, at the 1964 international ‘Naive Painters’ exhibition in Rabat, and again in 1985 at the ‘Moroccan Naive Painters’ exhibition at the Batha Museum in Fez. Today, several of his works can be found in private collections in Morocco, Tunisia, France and the United States."
