Samuel Alken Junior,  - Two scenes of dueling figures on horseback, in Turkish …

        Est: £200 - £300

Samuel Alken Junior,  British 1784-c.1825-  Two scenes of dueling figures on horseback, in Turkish costume;  each pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, the first signed 'Sam Alken' (lower right), the second signed 'S. Alken.' (lower left), each 20 x 28.1 cm., two (2).  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Samuel Alken Junior was a member of the prolific Alken family of artists, all of whom specialised in equestrian subjects, particularly hunting and racing scenes. The artist is not to be confused with his father, Samuel Alken Senior (1750-1815), who founded the Alken artistic dynasty, and his brother, Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851). The present works exhibit Alken's considerable skill as an equestrian artist, convincingly conveying the powerful forms and prancing movements of the horses in battle.

        Est: £2,500 - £3,500

Samuel Alken, Jnr,  British 1784-1825-  Breaking cover;  oil on canvas, signed 'S. Alken.' (lower right), 61.5 x 92 cm.  Note:  By the end of the 18th century, the sport of fox-hunting, once the reserve of wealthy landowners, was increasingly syndicated and financed by subscription. The demand for hunting pictures was at its highest and painters found ready employment in this field. Samuel Alken Junior was a member of one of the most prominent families of sporting artists working in Britain at this time. His father, Samuel Alken Snr (1756-1815), was the founder of the family tradition and was renowned for his quintessentially British hunting and sporting landscapes in the manner of George Stubbs ARA (1724-1806). It is probable that Samuel Alken Junior, like his younger brother Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851) received his artistic training from his father. The present work was likely painted in c.1810, when the artist was generally signing his works S. Alken.

Trained in Yorkshire, and racing exclusively in the North of England, Doctor Syntax won at least thirty-six races in ten seasons from 1814 to 1823. He was noted for his consistency and durability and recorded multiple wins in many of the period's leading staying races. He won the Preston Gold Cup on a record seven consecutive occasions, as well as five Lancaster Gold Cups and five Richmond Gold Cups. He was retired to stud in 1824 and proved a successful sire of winners.

Samuel Alken (1784-c.1825) No. XI THE RABBIT WARREN, after George Morland. Landscape scene showing the tense moment as the country folk wait for the rabbits to emerge from a burrow, having been flushed out by ferrets; the eager lurcher is poised for the chase that will ensue. Lettered below the image, Painted by G. Morland/Egraved by S. Alken/London: Published March 2. 1801, by I.R. Smith, King Street, Covent Garden. Hand coloured Aquatint on paper. 40 cm x 50 cm Catalogue notes: The rabbit warren was a staple part of the rural economy, and an important feature on most country estates. This scene shows the tense moment as the country folk wait for the rabbits to emerge from a burrow, having been flushed out by ferrets; the eager lurcher is poised for the chase that will ensue. Morland is perhaps best known as a painter of picturesque scenes from everyday rural life. His genre subjects occasionally have a sporting theme, yet he rarely attempted the conventional ones of hunting or horse-racing. This is somewhat surprising as it is known that Morland himself enjoyed riding to hounds and on several instances rode as a gentleman jockey.

ALKEN, Samuel (1784-1824?). Delineations of British Field Sports together with the Various Methods of Poaching. London: J. Hudson, 1822 [watermarked J. Whatman 1821]. Oblong 2° (287 x 458mm). 24 hand-coloured lithographs. (Plate 13 just trimmed by the binder, shallow crease in the first plate; a few short marginal tears of which one repaired, faint stain in the top margin of the first few leaves.) Later red half morocco, spine gilt in compartments, sides with gilt double fillet, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers (extremities rubbed, boards spotted, light soiling). Provenance: John Croft Deverell (bookplate) -- C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (1862-1939; bookplate; his sale, Sotheby's, 22 May 1939, lot 69, to Ernest R. Gee on behalf of:) -- Hugh Auchincloss (1897-1976; invoice from Gee laid in). THE SCHWERDT COPY, HAND-COLOURED, OF THIS GREAT RARITY. 'The coloured issue ranks as one of the rarest sporting books of the period. There is only a record of a second coloured copy, which is untraceable' (Schwerdt). Not in the British Library; not in Abbey, Dixon, or Tooley. WorldCat locates just one copy, the Mellon copy, at Yale's Sterling Library; that one uncoloured and on grey paper. Delineations is the only book published by Samuel Alken, Henry Thomas Alken's brother; it was first issued in six monthly parts in wrappers (no copy known), and then in book form in two states: uncoloured on drab paper, as Mellon, or the more luxurious issue with coloured lithographs on white paper, as here. Schwerdt notes that the vigorous style of these plates made them eminently suitable for framing, and accounts in part for their rarity; 'twenty years' search has not enabled us to make up a complete set'. Later in the collection of Hugh Auchincloss, attorney and power broker, and stepfather to both Gore Vidal and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Mellon/Podeschi 115 (uncoloured, and bound with an additional plate); Schwerdt I, pp.27-8; Siltzer, p. 75.
