      Oil on Panel, 10" x 8" (Sight); 15.5" x 13.5" (Framed). Stephen Alke (1874-1941) was born in Augusta, Kentucky in 1874. He painted landscapes and portraits, and he designed murals, posters, and art glass. From 1919-41, he worked exclusively as a landscape and portrait painter. He studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati with Frank Duveneck, T.S. Noble, Henry Sharp, Vincent Nowottny, and L.H. Meakin. He died in Cincinnati in 1941.

      OHIO RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH STEAMBOAT. Oil on canvas, unsigned, possibly Stephen Alke (Ohio, 1875-1941). An impressionistic view of the ohio River from the Kentucky shore, with Cincinnati in the background. The verso with a profile portrait of a young girl. 21 3/4"h. 18"w., modern frame, 27 3/4"h. 23 1/2"w. Alke was born in Kentucky and studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy under Frank duveneck and L.H. Meakin. His wife was fellow-artist elizabeth Heil Alke (1877-1938).
