    • Alinari, Leopoldo: The Apollino statue
      Jun. 10, 2020

      Alinari, Leopoldo: The Apollino statue

      Est: €500 - €750

The Apollino statue, Florence. Circa 1854. Large-format, gold-toned, lightly coated salt print. 33 x 25 cm. Number 25 in lower right corner in the negative, mounted to card (some foxing), photographer's Fratelli Alinari, Fotografi Firenze, Presso Luigi Bardo blindstamp below the image on the mount. The Apollino or Medici Apollo is a Roman copy of a Hellenistic sculpture of the youthful god Apollo. It is now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Unlike many other antique sculptures in the Medici collection, it was not brought to Florence by Cosimo III de' Medici, but remained in Rome. Although it has since lost some of its prestige, it was praised as one of the most copied Roman sculptures until the 18th century. It was seen in the Tribuna of the Uffizi by the English poet Percy B. Shelley who commented on it: "It is difficult to imagine anything more beautiful than Ganymede; but the spirit-like lightness, the softness, the flowing perfection of the forms [of Apollino] surpass him. The countenance, though exceedingly sweet and gentle, is not divine. There is a feminine liveliness with which one gains passive happiness, and yet there is a boyish inexperience which is exceedingly attractive. An attitude to life seems to flow through the limbs, giving them lightness. Nothing can be completely more beautiful than the legs and the union of the feet with the ankles and the fading of the foot lines down to the tender extremities. It is like a spirit even in a dream. The neck is long and yet full and supports the head with its luxuriant and knotted hair, as if it did not need to be supported." – A few light surface smudges, otherwise a rich dark print in very good condition. - Sollten Sie detailliertere Zustandsberichte wünschen, kontaktieren Sie uns bitte. / Should you need more detailed condition reports, please contact us.

Calotype “Paradise door by L. Ghiberti, Florence“ Alinari, 1855

      Est: €900 - €1,170

Calotype Italy, around 1855 Leopoldo Alinari (1832-65) – Italian photographer Numbered in the photography "11." Dimensions of the photograph approx. 33.9 (H) x 6 (W) cm Dimensions of the cardboard 46.5 (H) x 35.5 (W) cm In good condition This calotype has been taken around the year 1855 by the Italian photographer Leopoldo Alinari. The motif presents the eastern door of the baptistery of Florence, the so-called door of paradise, which was created by Lorenzo Ghiberti in the years between 1425 and 1452. The ten gilded panels present scenes of the Old Testament. This photograph is not signed, but numbered "11." in the photography and can be doubtless attributed to Leopoldo Alinari. The calotype is in a good condition and is one of the early works by Alinari (see negative number 11) and thus produced by himself and not by one of his assistants. The photograph measures 33.9 (H) x 6 (W) cm, the cardboard measures 46.5 (H) x 35.5 (W) cm. Numbered 1611. The Alinari Brothers Leopoldo Alinari (1832–1865) founded a small photographic studio in the Via Cornina in Florence in the year 1852. His two brothers, Romualdo Alinari (1830–1890) and Giuseppe Alinari (1836–1890), became his partners in the year 1854. Their studio was called Fratelli Alinari (Alinari Brothers) and was specialized in portraits and artistic architectural photography. In the following year, the Alinaris had their first presentation at the Paris International Exposition that made them very popular. In 1855, their sales catalogue contained 84 photographs with motifs of Florence, Pisa and Siena and several other places. The Alinari archive holds more than 5.5 million photographs from all over the world. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

    • Alinari, Leopoldo: The Baptistery, Florence
      Dec. 03, 2014

      Alinari, Leopoldo: The Baptistery, Florence

      Est: €1,400 - €1,800

The Baptistery, Florence. Circa 1856. Large-format lightly albumenized salt print. 34 x 26 cm. Mounted to thin strong card (light foxing), with handwritten title and distributor's blindstamp Luigi Bardi Firenze below the image on the mount. The photograph offered here is a very interesting and rare example of Leopoldo Alinari's earliest photographic activities in Florence. This print is not stamped with Alinari's name and is not numbered, however, Luigi Bardi's blindstamp is on the mount and it was probably still printed in Bardi's workshop where Leopoldo had worked for some years as an apprentice. Leopoldo's early views, made from calotype negatives, are known since 1851. In 1854 Alinari's company stamp 'Fratelli Alinari/Fotografi/Firenze' was used for the first time, however, with the supplement "presso Luigi Bardi" (near Luigi Bardi). Alinari's full autonomy from Bardi's printing shop was achieved a bit later in 1855, and was indicated by a new edition stamp 'Fratelli Alinari, Photographes - éditeurs'. - Minimal fading in lower edge, otherwise a strong print in near excellent condition. Lit.: Falzone del Barbarò. Das Italien der Alinari. Florence 1988.
