b. 1973 - d. 2018

(b 1973) Shirin Aliabadi is an Iranian artist whose work deals with the contradictions faced by contemporary Iranian women. Her most famous series of photographs, the Miss Hybrid, is a humorous take on the appearance of the fashionable girls in Tehran. With their blonde hair, blue contact lenses and telltale surgical tape on their noses, the girls in these images subvert preconceptions about the chador, demonstrating the freedom Iranian women exercise within their confines. Aliabadi is also interested in the battle between religious beliefs and popular culture in modern-day Iran and her “Sofreh” series, created in collaboration with Iranian artist Farhad Moshiri, examines the way that television has subverted tradition family eating habits.
