AWANG FADILAH ALI HUSSEIN b. Sabah, 1972 RHYTHM OF THE RAINFOREST, 2013 Signed and dated ‘Ag Fadilah…13’ (bottom centre) Acrylic on board 36 cm x 28.5 cm Awang Fadilah Bin Ali Hussein was a born in 1972 in Menumbok, Sabah. His works are characterised with distinct black and white colour, often themed with culture and life within the rich flora and fauna of Sabah. Awang Fadilah began to become active as an artist in the late 1990s and learnt drawing from the famous artist – Yusof Ismail (more widely known as Yusof ‘Gajah’). Awang has taken part in various exhibitions including those organised by Balai Seni Lukis Sabah, and extended his reach not just in Malaysia but also overseas. He earned his reputation by winning several art competitions, most notably the ‘Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustrations’ organised by the Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO, Japan in 2006, in which he achieved 3rd place with the illustrations in his book ‘Land Below the Wind’.
