Painter

Alexandros Alexandrakis (Athens, 1913 – Athens, 1968) was a Greek painter, who became widely known from his particularly dynamic depictions of the Greco-Italian War of 1940.

Alexandrakis showed an early talent for design and painting. In the age of 17, he exhibited 23 works in the group show organised by HAN. He then studied painting in Athens School of Fine Arts under the supervision of masters Spyridonas Vikatos and Umbertos Argyros. Later, he attended classes in engraving by the master Giannis Kefallinos. He graduated from the school in 1937, and went on to participate in various exhibitions.

In World War II, which in Greece is called the Greco-Italian War, Alexandrakis and his five brothers were called to military duty to the Greek-Albanian borders. He found himself in the high mountainous area of 'Pindos' where he served as corporal. Inspired by his situation, he sketched and painted his memories in a series of artworks that made him popular in Greece in the post-war years. A collection of them was published in 1968 with the title 'Thus we fought' (original in Greek: ?ts? p??eµ??saµe).

He also spent considerable time with Art nude and in 1958 Alexandrakis was the illustrator of public junior school book for the fifth grade. He became known outside Greece when he started collaborating with institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum and USA Senator Library. He died at the age of 55.

In 1980, the National Gallery of Greece honoured Alexandrakis with a Retrospection Exhibition. Gallery K in London presented works by him in 1998 and 2005.

Alexandrakis is an artist of international repute, having forged a strong reputation in the USA where he regularly submitted work to The Guggenheim in New York for its annual exhibition. In 1950 he submitted two works for the design of a poster for the Marshall Plan, organised by the American Government. He won the first and second prize. Seascape is a rare thematic work for Alexandrakis, the turbulent nature of the sea and skyscape of the work perhaps reflects the mood of the veteran artist after having served in the Second World War. His work can be found in many public and private collections in Greece and Cyprus. Notably at The National Gallery Greece, The Municipality of Athens, The State Gallery of Contemporary Cypriot Art, The Leventis Gallery, The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Centre Foundation and The Hellenic War Museum.

Title: Seated woman putting her hair up, 1940-46 pencil on paper signed lower right Alexandrakis born in Athens in 1913, and long before he entered the city’s prestigious School of Fine Arts. Alexandrakis displayed a precocious talent, drawing and painting whenever possible. At the age of 17 he exhibited 23 pieces of work at a group show organised by the YMCA. When he graduated from the art college in 1937, he was the first student ever to win four major awards presented for portraiture, clothed and semi-clothed life drawing and painting, and composition. As Europe teetered on the brink of its devastating war, Alexandrakis participated in numerous exhibitions until 1940, when he and his five brothers were drafted into the army. The war proved to be a seminal experience for Alexandros Alexandrakis, who made his name as a war artist with his evocative, powerful yet poignant impressions of the horrific campaign against the Italian fascists fought in the mountains of Albania. It was during the heat of war while rapidly recording images on whatever scraps of paper were available that he learnt about the economy of line. After the war he put death and destruction behind him, to concentrate on the human form in its more joyful aspects, particularly nubile young women signifying the life-force. He forged a strong reputation in Greece and in the USA, winning numerous important awards, and was regularly invited to submit work to the Guggenheim’s exhibition of ‘National Unity, Letters and Arts’ and the ‘National Exhibition of Engravings’ in the Library of Congress in Washington. His award-winning book The War We Fought – 1940-41, illustrated with over 100 drawings and paintings, was published in 1968, the year of his premature death at the age of 55.
