In 1777 he replaced the house with a Strawberry Hill Gothic Revival mansion. He was a High Sherriff in 1799 and MP for Worcester from 1802-1806 when he was created 1st Baronet, as Scott of Great Barr. He married Margaret Whitby by whom he had three children, one daughter Mary who died aged 15 and two sons Edward Dolman Scott who succeeded him in 1828, and William Scott who became Vicar of Great Barr. A portrait of Sir Joseph Scott by John Singleton Copley, circa 1765 is in the collection of Los Angeles County Museum. (AC1992.317.1)

Formal portrait painting depicting a bust length three-quarter length view of a gentleman in silvered amour with white collar, long curled wig, stoic facial expression and rosy cheeks against a dark muted background. Verso of frame with hand written applied plaque noting artist and subject "ROSE OF KILROCK CASTLE". Sitter could be a male member of the Rose Clan in Scotland who resided at Kilravock Castle in the council area of Highland, Scotland. Framed approximately 36.75" x 31.75". Restoration. 35"h. 27"w., in a gilt frame, 39"h. 31"w. Ex Vicar Brothers (England), ex Dr. Richard and Sue Studebaker (Ohio), sold at Garth's, November 2012, lot 158. Alexander was the son of Scottish portraitist John Alexander. Cosmo traveled throughout Europe before coming to America in 1766. In America he also traveled widely, from Newport south to Charleston. He is most well-known for taking a young Gilbert Stuart as an apprentice while in Newport.       Attributed to Cosmo Alexander, Scottish 1724-1772- Portrait of a doctor, standing in a library interior, half-length, wearing a blue velvet hat and red coat, over a tied white stock; oil on canvas, held in an English 18th century Kentian style frame, with eared corners, plain moulded sight-edge, sanded fasicia and plain moulded outer edge, 77x64cm: Note: Cosmo Alexander was the son and pupil of John Alexander, an Aberdeen painter. Cosmo had a strong belief in the Jacobite cause and participated in the 1745 up Rising, after which he went to Rome to seek refuge. He stayed there from 1747 to 1751, painting portraits of members of the expatriate Jacobite community, including the family of Bonnie Prince Charlie. He travelled throughout Italy and visited Paris before settling in London in 1754. In 1766, he embarked on an extended tour of the American colonies where he once again found favour painting portraits of ΘmigrΘ Scots.
