Alfred Alexander Gockel Germany, (B. 1952) Encore, 2012 mixed media / gouache on paper Signed lower right. Biography from Baterbys Art Framing & Furniture: Alfred Alexander Gockel (1952-) is a German artist, born and raised in the coal mining community of Ludinghausen. He showed his artistic inclinations from a very young age, and with his parents' encouragement he had his first artwork released by a German publisher when he was only eight. As a teenager Gockel started working in the coal mines and was focused on becoming an engineer, but his artistic drive eventually pushed him toward studying art and design instead. This led him to start his own publishing company in 1983 in his home town, where he still publishes his own prints and limited edition silk-screens. With the introduction of his art to the U.S. market, Gockel participated in more art shows and since it takes him two to four hours to complete a painting, he decided to do live performances. Painting in front of people allowed him to draw energy from the audience, adding even more vibrancy to his works. In 2006 Alfred Gockel was commissioned by the United States Olympic committee to create an official piece of artwork for the Olympic Games in Turin, Italy. Gockel's boldly colored abstracts lined in thick black against white backdrops have become his signature, instantly recognizable around the globe. The widespread appeal of his art, to collectors from every walk of life and social status, has propelled his career to where Gockel has become one of the most prolific distributors of modern art posters in the world, with collectors in over 50 countries
