            F. HUGO D'ALÉSI (1849-1906) NICE. 1895. 42½x30¼ inches, 108x78 cm. F. Hugo d'Alési, Paris. Condition B+: partially-replaced right margin; overpainting in margins and upper right image; repaired tears at edges, some slightly into image and upper text. Romanian-born Hugo d'Alési was one of the earliest artists to design posters for the French railway companies. They were printed using a process similar to chromolithography called simile-aquarelle (literally, faux watercolor), that required up to 20 different colors to render the final image, making them much more richly printed, detailed and painterly than the travel posters from subsequent decades. By some accounts, he designed "hundreds for the railway companies" (Hillion p. 278). It was such an expensive process that it drove the artist into bankruptcy shortly before his premature death. Riviera 418, Azur 43, La Mer p. 48, Stembera p. 16.

Original Vintage French Lac D'Annecy Poster by Hugo d'Alesi 1900 PLM

            Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Lac d'Annecy (Lake Annecy in English) is a bucolic area of the French Alps, near the Swiss border. For centuries it has been prized for its dramatic beauty, but surged in popularity in the early 1900s when the expansion of trains made it more accessible. This poster promotes exactly that; hop aboard the Paris - Lyon- Mediterranee (P.L.M.) train and several hours later, a boat will meet you at the Lac d'Annecy station for transport to the resort towns and thermal baths that line the Lake. The beauty of the Lake is on full display in this poster, with a dramatic sunset beginning to dip behind the peaks of the Alps. Seagulls graze the water as the boat comes to pick us up for our vacation. Hugo d'Alesi (1849-1906) created this stunning poster. Born in Romania, d'Alesi was one of the first true poster artists and he worked almost exclusively for the P.L.M. train company. He printed his posters in an elaborate fashion that often incorporated more than 15 colors, which gave them a rich, watercolor effect. His hundreds of poster designs were well-loved by all of France, including some famous artists. Paul Cezanne once said, "I should like to do decorative landscapes like Hugo d'Alesi, yes, with my small sensibility". This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Hugo d'Alesi (French / Romanian, 1849-1906 - also known as Friedrich Hugo Alesi or Friedrich Hugo Alessi). "Lac D"Annecy" lithograph in colors, linen backed, ca. 1900. An original French travel poster on linen by Friedrich Hugo d'Alesi who was best known for his exceptional travel posters commissioned by railroad lines. This composition features Lake Annecy in the Haute Savoie with a view of La Tournette which rises 2500 meters from the lake. In the foreground, D'Alesi featured the boat La France which would later sink; this location has become a favorite diving spot. A stunning original French travel poster by Hugo d'Alesi mounted in an attractive custom frame. Size (sight view): 40.75" L x 28.25" W (103.5 cm x 71.8 cm) Hugo d'Alesi was among the earliest artists to design posters for French railways. His posters were printed via a process called simile-aquarelle (meaning "faux watercolor"). The final images were comprised of as many as 20 different colors, resulting in rich imagery that was more detailed and painterly than later travel posters. Unfortunately, the process was very expensive process and eventually drove D'Alesi into bankruptcy. D'Alesi's posters had many admirers throughout the world including Paul Cezanne, who stated, "I should like to do decorative landscapes like Hugo d'Alesi, yes, with my small sensibility" (Source: Swann Galleries - Cezanne p. 232). Please note: This is an original linen-backed poster; it is not a reproduction. Connemara.

            Est: $1,400 - $1,700

ARTIST: F. HUGO D'ALESI (1849-1906) SIZE: 35 1/4 x 48 3/4 in./89.6 x 124 cm PRINTER: Imp. A. Bellier, Paris (not shown) DESCRIPTION: “Connemara is a savage beauty.” That’s how Oscar Wilde described the unspoiled magnificence of the Gallway country town whose name translates from the Irish as “Conneely’s Village.” In Connemara, the light constantly changes the mood and tone of the landscape, and perhaps no artist was better suited to set this on paper than d’Alesi. Long regarded the jewel of Ireland, the promotion is an extremely rare foreign foray for the French designer, though it’s possible that the image was intended for distribution in Paris. Whatever the situation, the artist is as comfortable with the gothic chill of a 6th century graveyard as he is with the brooding thrill of the dewy, undulant landscape. Jun. 20, 2023

Original Vintage Griffon Bicycle Poster by Hugo d'Alesi 1904 Cycle

            Est: $2,500 - $3,500

What could be better than a bike ride along the Cote d'Azur on a Griffon Bicycle? This charming poster from 1904 showcases early cycling, and the outfits to boot. Griffon was one of the earlier French bicycle producers, but not much history about the company has been preserved.
