George Ames Aldrich (1872-1941) American, Oil on Masonite

          Est: $1,000 - $2,000

George Ames Aldrich (1872-1941) American, Oil on Masonite. Titled "Caudebec-en-Caux." Depicts a canal scene in Normandy village. Signed and titled lower left.  Condition: Good.  Overall: 28 1/4 X 33 1/4 in.  Sight: 24 1/2 X 29 1/2 in.  #3761 .  Born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1872, George Ames Aldrich began his early training as an artist at the Art Students League in New York. He continued his studies in Paris at the prestigious Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi, where he studied under the great masters James McNeill Whistler and Fritz Thaulow. In the 1890s he worked as an illustrator for Punch Magazine and the London Times. In 1909 Aldrich maintained a studio in Dieppe so that he had easy access to the quiet harbors and waterways of Brittany and Normandy for inspiration. When World War I broke out he returned to the United States, where he applied his accomplished painting skills to interpret his native country. His favorite locals included the fishing village of Gloucester, Massachusetts and the rolling hillsides of rural Brown County, Indiana, where he spent most of the rest of his life. Aldrich excelled at painting pastoral river landscapes and the reflection of light upon water, but occasionally departed from these bucolic subjects to paint the steel mills of the Chicago area. These particularly paintings, often large brooding industrial nocturnes, are executed in the gritty manner of the New York Ashcan School, and are powerful commentaries on the American Industrial Revolution, captured with the impressionist glory of a plein air painter. Since his death in 1941 there have been several posthumous exhibitions of his work, including at the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University and at the Smithsonian Museum.

George Ames Aldrich (1872-1941) 25" x 30" oil on canvas, Maritime Nocturnal, signed lower right. Recently conserved. The following biography is from the fineestateart.com website: Born in Worcester, Massachusetts on June 3rd, 1872, George Ames Aldrich was the son of George Wellington Aldrich and Catherine Elizabeth Ames. Originally an architecture student, he attended the Dean Academy in Franklin, Massachusetts and later at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After his training he went on to work under the American Impressionist John H. Twachtman in New York. His most known years as an artist were spent in France (Normandy) and Brittany. Working with prominent French artists, he developed artistically and began to show an affinity for landscapes. Thus, his most well-known paintings, executed around 1890-1920, show countryside scenes of Brittany and Normandy. These works are composed of broad areas of color and are executed in an impressionistic manner. It is said that in 1922, after moving from Paris to New York to Chicago, he exhibited fifty-four of his works in South Bend, Indiana at the Oliver Hotel. The success of that exhibition enabled him to move to South Bend, where he began to teach drawing at the Fine Arts Club. Once his French landscape paintings found a market in Indiana, he then produced a body of work for patrons of Elkhart, Indiana public institutions, and a multitude of South Bend citizens. He was also noted for producing seascapes, cityscapes, and still-lifes. During his time in Chicago and South Bend in the 1920s and 1930s, he exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Hoosier Salon. At the time of his death on March 7th, 1941, he was a husband to his third wife, Esta, and a father to one daughter, Elizabeth. George Ames Aldrich (Indiana/Illinois/Massachusetts, 1872-1941) oil on canvas marine painting titled "Low Tide in Holland" depicting a figure atop a horse drawn wagon beside a ship moored on a beach at low tide, the ocean visible in the background beneath an evening sky. Signed and dated "G. Ames Aldrich 1919" lower right. Housed in a carved giltwood frame. Sight: 24 1/2" H x 29 1/2" W. Framed: 32 1/2" H x 37 1/2" W. Biography: "George Ames Aldrich was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on June 3, 1872. His early art experience took place in the 1890's while living in Europe. He studied art in the Midwest, the East Coast, and throughout Europe, becoming a successful and respected etcher and painter. He worked as an illustrator for both Punch magazine and The London Times in the 1890's. Returning to the United States, he became a member of the Art Students' League in New York City. Soon thereafter, it is thought he may have studied architecture at M.I.T. in Massachusetts, and his experience there is evident in the buildings and houses in many of his landscapes. Aldrich continued his art education in Paris, attending Academies Julian and Colarossi, and later joining the Societe des Artistes Francais. Between 1909 and 1910, Aldrich lived with artist/instructor Dieppe, completing many of his paintings in Normandy and Brittany. In 1918, Aldrich arrived in Chicago and became involved with the South Bend art scene during the 1920s. Aldrich exhibited regularly at the Art Institute of Chicago, and was a member of the Chicago Galleries Association, the Hoosier Salon, and the Chicago Society of Painters and Sculptors. In 1924, he won an architectural club traveling scholarship and traveled to Europe to paint in England, Germany, Spain, Italy, and France. His work is represented in many museums throughout the world, and many private and corporate collections carry his work including the Union League of Chicago and the War Mothers Building in Washington DC. He died in Chicago in 1941." (adapted from Michael David Zellman, 300 Years of American Art and William Gerdts, Art Across America).

George Ames Aldrich, (American, 1872-1941), Normandy Scene, oil on panel, 21 1/4" x 28 1/8"

          Est: $1,500 - $2,500

George Ames Aldrich (American, 1872-1941) Normandy Scene oil on panel signed lower right 21 1/4" x 28 1/8" Catalog Note: A Massachusetts native who studied at the Art Students League of New York, George Ames Aldrich undertook further training in Paris at the end of the 19th century. He settled on Chicago's South Side in 1917 with his wife and had four paintings in the Art Institute of Chicago's 22nd Annual Chicago & Vicinity exhibition in 1918. Aldrich was skilled at rendering the city's growing skyline and modern industrial progress. After another trip to Europe in 1920, Aldrich began to focus primarily on rural landscapes, often with streams running through the villages of Normandy or various scenes in Indiana. In 1922, Aldrich relocated to South Bend, Indiana with his second wife. Blending the impressionism of Fritz Thulow and the tonalism of James Abbott McNeill Whistler — both of whom Aldrich claimed were supposedly his teachers — the overall effect of Aldrich's compositions are to present a simultaneously nostalgic yet realistic view of natural and urban milieus. This Aldrich oil painting of a picturesque Normandy village is at once dreamlike and grounded given the presence of the lone female figure on the path. She seems to beckon the viewer to cross the stone bridge and follow her into town.
