    ULYSSES S. GRANT

    Est: $2,500 - $3,500

ULYSSES S. GRANT(1822 - 1885) Eighteenth President of the United States and Union lieutenant general. A superb grouping relative appointment of Commodore and Rear Admiral James Alden, Jr. (1810-1877), who fought in the Civil War, commanding such vessels as the USS Brooklyn and Susquehanna, and a direct descendent of Mayflower Pilgrim John Alden. Includes a partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio, Washington, June 19, 187, an appointment of Alden as Rear Admiral , countersigned by Secretary of the Navy GEORGE M. ROBESON. Along with a signed CDV image of Alden in head and shoulders, (no backstamp), and a partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, bearing the stamped signature of Andrew Johnson, Washington, July 26, 1866, appointing Alden as Commodore of the Navy, and signed in ink by Secretary of the Navy GIDEON WELLES. Grant's appointment bears usual toning, light loss at top right corner, and folds, while the Johnson appointment has light toning and fold wear, with a small fold tear beneath the stamped signature. CDV very good to fine. An excellent grouping of material related to an important Civil War soldier. Ex: EAHA Auction, Aug. 25, 2001, where it sold for $3,162.00. Three items.
