Lewis, Sydney OTHER NOTES: Gretchen Albrecht's artistic journey is a testament to the power of colour, form, and expression shaping the cultural landscape of New Zealand and beyond. Born in Auckland in 1943, Albrecht emerged as a pioneering figure in contemporary art, pushing the boundaries of abstraction. Albrecht's early work was influenced by the vibrant energy of the New Zealand landscape and the Abstract Expressionist movement of the mid-20th century. Her works from this period often feature dynamic compositions, characterised by gestural brushstrokes and a rich, emotive use of colour. As Albrecht's career progressed, she continued to push the boundaries of her practice, exploring new techniques and concepts in her pursuit of mastering abstract art. In 2000, she created the iconic work, Hydra (Star Cluster). This monumental monochromatic painting exemplifies Albrecht's ability to create immersive, otherworldly abstract "landscapes" that captivate the imagination. Hydra (Star Cluster) is a mesmerising composition of dynamic forms, reminiscent of a cosmic explosion. Albrecht's works are immersive experiences that invite viewers to engage with the elemental forces of the natural world. Through her painting Albrecht transports viewers to a realm of ethereal beauty and wonder, inviting them to contemplate the mysteries of the universe. While Albrecht is known primarily as a painter, her unconventional use of paint and shaped canvases blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture, pushing both domains into a distinctive style. Her innovative approach has left an enduring impact, inspiring countless artists to explore the limitless possibilities of abstraction. Albrecht has a guiding force in the New Zealand art community, mentoring younger artists and advocating for the importance of arts education. Her contributions to the cultural life of New Zealand have been widely recognised, earning her numerous accolades and honours, including the prestigious Order of New Zealand in 2018. Albrecht's impact extends far beyond her native country, with her works held in major collections around the world, including prominent Australian institutions, such as the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. These collections recognise the significance of Albrecht's contributions to the field of contemporary art, ensuring that her legacy endures for generations to come. Gretchen Albrecht CNZM (New Zealand 1943-) Stella, 1990 signed and dated 1990 to the reverse; further titled and dated to the stretcher acrylic and oil on canvas 73.5 x 101.5cm Footnote: Provenance: With Todd Gallery, London Literature: Luke Smythe, Gretchen Albrecht: Between Gesture and Geometry, Massey University Press, New Zealand, 2019, p.182 (ill.) One of the most celebrated contemporary New Zealand artists, Gretchen Albrecht has gained international recognition and has exhibited widely in both New Zealand and Europe since the 1970s. Throughout her career, Albrecht has developed an incisive and deeply personal visual iconography, utilising characteristic stained and shaped canvases, bold, wide brush strokes, and an evocative use of colour and geometry. The present lot, dated 1990, marks a departure from Albrecht’s earliest works, which were typically executed on semi-circular canvases.

GRETCHEN ALBRECHT New Zealand (b. 1943) Untitled mixed media and collage on masonite, signed and dated lower right "Albrecht 70" 36 x 48 inches Provenance: Private Collection, Oregon Other Notes: Tags: modern / contemporary, Oceania Notes: Biography of Gretchen Albrecht by Mary Kisler, Curator, Auckland Art Gallery. Gretchen Albrecht has an international reputation as one of New Zealand's most highly regarded painters. Her work is known for its geometry, an emotional use of color and a constant evolution of influences, media and technique. Graduating with Honors from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1964, Albrecht taught for some years. In the late 1970s she took a 13 month trip to Europe and the United States. Back in New Zealand she was awarded the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship at the University of Otago in 1981. During that year in Dunedin, Albrecht began working on the lunette shaped canvases which she calls Hemispheres. Her recent travels proved to be a catalyst, with European paintings and art history referenced in the titles of works such as Giotto's Blue and Lunette (for Fra Angelico). Of this time the artist says: I knew I wanted the hemisphere in 1981. I went to Dunedin with quadrants, the hemisphere happened in the studio, I put the quadrants together. I wanted to break out of the rectangle and the square and to introduce a curve. In 1989 Albrecht molded the Hemispheres into the Oval of a map, allowing her to encompass a whole world containing East-West and North-South correlations and oppositions. Albrecht says: Ovals are a gentle shape, what happens in the top part could be reflected in the bottom half so I could have a continuous movement of paint, repetition and rhythm, spiraling, all en-circling, constantly in-flux which I like very much. The 2002 retrospective exhibition of Albrecht's work held at the Auckland Art Gallery met with great acclaim. Dunedin Public Art Gallery and the City Gallery, Wellington held a 2005 retrospective of Oval and Hemisphere paintings that same year, and the Mark Hutchins Gallery, Wellington exhibited paintings from the 1980s through to 2000 alongside Albrecht's recent stainless steel sculptures. In 2009 Albrecht began working on a new series of rectangular paintings featuring oval shaped vortices of color combined with slender horizontal geometric figures. The first of these paintings were exhibited in her exhibitions: Between Paint and Nature, Nadene Milne Gallery, Arrowtown and Rosea, Mark Hutchins Gallery, Wellington. 2010 saw Albrecht's solo exhibition, Roses in the Snow, Sue Crockford Gallery, Auckland. A further solo exhibition was held in 2014 at Two Rooms, Auckland. The paintings exhibited featured the three stretcher shapes of hemispheres, ovals and rectangles. With a career spanning five decades, Gretchen Albrecht's work is held in the collections of Auckland Art Gallery,The Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa, Tongarewa, the Gallery of New South Wales and the Newcastle Art Gallery, Australia. Gretchen's painting takes the modernist exploration of color and form and moves it to new contemporary levels. The forms on which she paints and the way in which paint is worked within the hemispheres, ovals and rectangular canvases are almost kinaesthetic - the paint carried by the movement of her body, the span of her arm. Her work is significant in many ways, redolent with meaning and deeply satisfying; an exploration of what color can do and what it can mean. Acutely aware of the historical considerations that have challenged painters Giotto claimed human experience as a valid subject for art, her paintings are polyvalent, layered with meanings, yet individually rich unto themselves. GRETCHEN ALBRECHT - Night Mist, diptych

      Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Acrylic on canvas hemisphere - Signed & dated 1992 verso In 1981, Gretchen Albrecht completed her first hemisphere painting, consisting of two large quadrants bolted together to form a semi-circle. This became an acclaimed stylistic format for her work, and she went on to produce a number of other hemispheres in the 1980s and 1990s. In creating these semi-circular works, Albrecht was consistently bold, scaling them up and down, and experimenting with a range of different mediums and paint application techniques. The sweeping brushes of paint and two-toned sharpness of Night Mist, Diptych is energising to behold. This work is powerful in the way it connects us to the tensions and oppositions of life. Just as the two quadrants exist as one and alongside each other, so too do we encounter the duality of nature, the universe, our bodies, and the existence of our light and shadow selves. The space between the two quadrants is especially potent, being where the two sides come together and are most obvious in their division. In and through this space, the work is both at one with, and at conflict with itself. The satisfyingly symmetrical exchange between blue and yellow makes it difficult not to see this painting as a perfect whole, or even as a double whole. At the same time, it is only half-formed in a way, and we are acutely aware of the semi-circle’s missing other half. In both art and nature, it is the shape of the circle which represents infinity and completeness, and Albrecht does not grant us this completeness. Instead, she instils a sense of absence in the viewer, leaving only the promise of completion. In this way, the painting suggests the absence of another half; an implied void. As Albrecht herself described it, the hemisphere implies space. A shape to contain the feeling.
