    • GERRIT ALBERTS,  DUTCH 1663-1757-  PORTRAIT OF A BOY, HALF-LENGTH, WEARING A GREEN COAT AND HOLDING
      Mar. 29, 2023

GERRIT ALBERTS,  DUTCH 1663-1757-  PORTRAIT OF A BOY, HALF-LENGTH, WEARING A GREEN COAT AND HOLDING

      Est: £1,500 - £2,500

Gerrit Alberts,  Dutch 1663-1757-  Portrait of a boy, half-length, wearing a green coat and holding an orange;  oil on canvas, oval, signed and dated 'Alberts. Fecit / 1700.' (lower left), bears old inscribed label in Dutch on the reverse, 63.3 x 51.8 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Alberts painted a number of wealthy figures in late 17th- and early 18th-century Dutch society. The present work is a charming and characterful portrait of a boy who smiles mischievously at the viewer. The orange, whilst initially enigmatic, may well be a reference to the House of Orange, the ruling dynasty of the 17th- and 18th-century Netherlands. Portraits by the artist are held at museums including the Mauritshuis [no.723]; the Museum Het Valkhof, Nijmegen [no.1970-095]; and the Groninger Museum [no.2243].
