Peju Alatise | See Me series

    Est: $8,700 - $10,900

Estimate: ₦ 4,000,000-5,000,000 | $8,700-10,900 | Peju Alatise explores the complex dynamics of gender, politics and race in contemporary Nigerian society through diverse mediums including installation, sculpture, painting and ceramics. Referencing pertinent cultural issues such as government corruption and social inequalities, Alatise uses art as a tool to uncover power relations and ideological contradictions in Nigeria in order to give a voice to underrepresented groups and events. Alatise’s work incorporates non-traditional materials and processes that form a chain of metaphors and narrative associations, often blending traditional Yoruba mythology with contemporary global concerns. Peju Alatise was exhibited at the first Nigerian Pavillion at the Venice Biennale in 2017. Her work has been chosen for the upcoming Venice Architectural Biennale. She is also a fellow of the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution. | Peju Alatise (Nigerian, b. 1975), See Me series, 2015, Acrylic on canvas, 122 x 122 cm. Footnotes The artist describes Unconscious Struggle as a critique of the tradition of child marriage. The work expresses her concern that religion in Nigeria is often used to justify gender inequality and violations of human rights. These rights are not protected by the legal system. The sculpture renders visible the vulnerability of these young girls, and the need for government intervention. Faced with the reality of adolescent pregnacy, the viewer is forced to question whether such practices as child marriage can be morally right.

PEJU ALATISE (b.1975) ASCENSION 2011 Mixed media on canvas 122 x 182.9 cm. (48 x 72 in.) Signed and dated (lower right) Artist's Statement I am a story teller, painter, sculptor, architect and furniture-designer but an artist in all. I have practiced professionally in these fields and I have found it difficult to abandon one for the other. Recently (in the past 2 years , I have attempted to intersect all these experiences and knowledge into one. Each art-piece I produce tells a story; my paintings become heavily 3-dimensional and sculptures are finished painterly. The execution of each art-piece is a result of experimenting and understanding characteristics of materials with the desire to present them in a contemporary African-aesthetics language.
