Saadi Al Kaabi Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1937 -

Iraqi artist Saadi Al Kaabi is a member of his native country's second generation of Modernists, drawing on the rich and diverse heritage of Islamic art. His work from the 1960s experimented with Western traditions of Cubism and Expressionism, but as his work matured, Al Kaabi began to incorporate Sumerian, Assyrian and Babylonian influences into his work, creating more stylized, nuanced compositions.

Al Kaabi's work is part of a larger post-independence artistic vision focused on establishing a new artistic identity in the Arab world of the 21st century. Both this painting, and the one in Lot 214, were gifts of Queen Rania of Jordan who has been a great promoter of Islamic art and a champion of education and community empowerment.

Al Kaabi is a notable member of Iraq’s second generation of modernist artists, inspired by Cubist and Expressinist artists. A graduate of Baghdad’s Institute of Fine Arts in 1960, the artist’s signature style emerged in the 1970s after two decades of involvement in the avant-garde modern art scene. Al Kaabi applies thick layers of paint in his works, using ginger earth tones to compose highly textured paintings. His practice forms part of a broader post-independence artistic approach in the Arab world concerned with fashioning a new national identity that involved looking to the past in search of cultural authenticity. Al Kaabi has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the 1976 Venice Biennale.
