Akkerman- Enschede 73 In de jaren zeventig behoort Akkerman tot een van de belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van de fundamentele schilderkunst in Nederland. Ben Akkerman was ambtenaar bij de gemeente Enschede. Zijn schilderijen en tekeningen maakte hij thuis in zijn vrije uren. Van jongs af aan was hij gefascineerd door het landschap rondom zijn woonplaats Enschede. Hij tekende en schilderde de bomen, geploegde akkers en fabrieksgebouwen. Zijn stijl veranderde van realistisch naar een abstracte manier van werken. Vanaf de jaren vijftig werd zijn werk steeds abstracter. De autodidact Akkerman heeft pas op drieënvijftigjarige leeftijd zijn eerste museale tentoonstelling (in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam). In datzelfde jaar, 1973, exposeert hij bij Art & Project, een galerie voor hedendaagse kunst in Amsterdam. Akkermans werk is opgenomen in diverse Nederlandse museumcollecties, waaronder die van het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Boijmans Van Beuningen en Rijksmuseum Twenthe. 685
