Born in Portland, Oregon, Louis Akin is one of the best known Arizona landscape painters associated with Grand Canyon views as well as scenes from Hopi Indian life. As a young man, he worked as a sign painter and then studied in New York City with William Merritt Chase and Frank DuMond. In 1901, "Harper's Weekly" published his illustrations," and in 1903, he was sent by Santa Fe Railway personnel to paint the Hopi Indians in Oraibi, Arizona. In 1907, Akin was commissioned by the Santa Fe Railroad to complete a painting of the El Tovar Hotel on the rim of the South Canyon. It became one of his most famous works and one of the best known paintings of the Southwest. In 1911 he was commissioned to produce paintings for the new Southwest American Indian room at the American Museum of Natural History. He had completed twenty oil sketches towards the project when he died in 1913. Apr. 06, 2024

LOUIS BENTON AKIN CHROMOLITHOGRAPH OF EL TOVAR HOTEL 1906

          Est: $1,800 - $2,500

AKIN, Louis Benton (1868-1913). El Tovar. Chromolithograph. W. J. Black, 1906. 7 3/4" x 15 1/2" sheet, 12" x 20" framed. Louis Benton was born in Oregon but trained in New York before settling in Arizona, whose climate beguiled and healed him. The present item is perhaps Akin's most famous: the El Tovar hotel, designed by Charles Frederick Whittlesey, which had opened the year before and still operates today. Along the path leading to the hotel are Hopi figures approaching the hotel. The Grand Canyon, viewed here from the South Rim, receded into the distance, dissolving into atmospheric perspective.

"Copyright 1906 by W.J. Black" on lower left margin. Louis Aikin's early works were devoted to depicting the Hopi peoples and their way of life; however, the artist's time living in the West also inspired him to create magnificent landscapes like this piece. "El Tovar" is his most beloved work, featuring the magnificent hotel with its awe-inspiring views of the Grand Canyon. Aikin was a descendant of western pioneers, and while he studied in New York with luminaries like William Merritt Chase, the West was where his heart sang. In fact the Hope gave Aikin the name "Mapli" after completing a series of paintings of the Hopi. Aikin stayed in Arizona for 18 months and published an article in 1906, reflecting his sympathy to their plight as the railroad industry was encroaching upon their way of life. Aikin also returned to Arizona in 1906 with plans to set up an artist colony devoted to depicting and defending the Hopi. He resided in Flagstaff on the Hopi reservation in Oraibi as well as in El Tovar Hotel on the southern rim of the Grand Canyon for the final seven years of his life.
